College Football Player Rankings: Cam Ward, Jalen Milroe headline On3 Impact Top 10 QBs after Week 5

College Football Player Rankings: Cam Ward, Jalen Milroe headline On3 Impact Top 10 QBs after Week 5

Week 5 of the college football season was a standout one at the quarterback position. Filled with plenty of impressive performances by several of the nation’s top signal callers on some of college football’s biggest stages.

Many quarterbacks excelled to start off the season, but showed that they can put up big-time numbers against even better completion this weekend. While others received a much-needed bye week heading into Week 6.

With that in mind, On3’s experts took another look at their Top 10 quarterback rankings. Reworking their list and making some changes following this weekend’s action in an updated Top 10 that can be seen below.

1. Cam WardMiami

Miami quarterback Cam Ward remains at the top of On3’s rankings following yet another strong performance. Throwing for 343 yards and three touchdowns along with 57 yards on the ground and a rushing score in Miami’s ACC opener against Virginia Tech on Friday night.

The Hokies represented Miami’s biggest challenge yet, up 10 points on the Hurricanes in the fourth quarterback before Ward led a 14-0 run to close out the ball game. Leading the nation with 18 touchdown passes and the second-most passing yards with 1,782 on the season so far.

2. Jalen MilroeAlabama

Milroe skyrockets up the quarterback rankings following his stellar performance against Georgia in one of the best college football games in recent history. Jumping from No. 5 to No. 2 after leading the Crimson Tide to a signature 41-34 win that now makes them the top-ranked team in the country.

He was able to get it done with his arm and his legs on Saturday, throwing for 374 yards and rushing for 117 yards, with two scores each through the air and the ground. Establishing himself as the premier quarterback with 1,237 total yards and 18 total touchdowns through four games.

3. Jaxson DartOle Miss

Jaxson Dart had his most underwhelming performance of the season in Ole Miss’ 20-17 loss to Kentucky over the weekend. Completing 66.7% of his passes for 261 yards and one touchdown which all represent season lows for the Rebels’ signal caller.

SEC play did not start off ideally for Dart and his squad, but he’s still undoubtedly one of the best passers in the country. Still leading the FBS with 1,815 yards to go along with his 16 total touchdowns so far this season.

4. Shedeur SandersColorado

Shedeur Sanders led the Buffs to their most impressive conference win since his father took over the Colorado program last season. Dominating UCF on Saturday in a 48-21 victory on the road to extend their record to 4-1 on the season and remain undefeated in Big 12 play.

After throwing an uncharacteristic interception on Colorado’s first possession of the game, Sanders bounced back with a masterful performance. Throwing for 290 yards and three touchdown passes to bring his season total up to 14 touchdown throws on the year.

5. Carson BeckGeorgia

Beck drops down several spots after once again having a slow start to another SEC game. Turning the ball over four total times in Georgia’s loss where the Bulldogs found themselves down 28-0 to start the ballgame.

But after the sluggish start, Beck led an impressive comeback that gave Georgia their first lead of the game with 2:31 remaining in the fourth quarter. Throwing for a career-high 439 yards in an instant classic that Alabama closed out strong.

6. Quinn EwersTexas

For the second straight game, Quinn Ewers did not suit up for the Longhorns after suffering from an abdominal injury in Week 3 against UTSA. Now getting some extra rest entering a bye week before a Red River Rivalry matchup against Oklahoma.

Texas had remained undefeated without Ewers, with Arch Manning under center running the offense. But with this being his third straight season missing time with injury, one of the nation’s top quarterbacks may enter the NFL Draft process with some durability concerns.

7. Dillon GabrielOregon

Following a slow start to the season, Oregon continues to roll and climb up the rankings. Getting a ton of help from quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who has been one of the most efficient passers in the country so far this season.

Gabriel threw his first interception of the year this weekend when his intended receiver fell coming out of his route. But he’s still completed an impressive 81.5% of his passes this season for 1,192 yards and nine touchdowns through four games.

8. Nico IamaleavaTennessee

The Volunteers had a bye week over the weekend that will allow first-year starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava to get some rest and more preparation for their next matchup. Taking on Arkansas this weekend following a stellar performance against Oklahoma.

Iamaleava is one of the most talented passers in the nation and has led college football’s highest-scoring offense through the first five weeks of the season. Throwing for 892 yards and seven touchdowns in his redshirt freshman season with plenty of room to keep growing.

9. Garrett NussmeierLSU

Garrett Nussmeier had some big shoes to fill this year after following in the footsteps of Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels. But so far he’s done an excellent job, leading one of the nation’s most explosive passing attacks and a 4-1 Tigers team.

Nussmeier ranks top five in the country in passing yards and touchdowns so far this season as a fearless gunslinger. Throwing for 1,652 yards and 15 touchdowns with the help of some talented wideouts and one of the best offensive lines in college football.

10. Will HowardOhio State

Last but not least, Will Howard. Who rounds out the Top 10 once again after leading the Buckeyes to their first Big Ten win over the season in a victory over Michigan State.

Howard’s thrown for 1,039 yards and eight touchdowns in his first four games with Ohio State after joining the team from Kansas State this offseason. A big-bodied athlete that’s now scored a touchdown on the ground in each of his last three games.
