Brian Kelly on Trey Holly status: ‘There’s not much that we can do’

Back in February, the LSU head coach Brian Kelly indefinitely suspended running back Trey Holly following an arrest in his hometown of Union Parish, Louisiana. Holly was charged with three felony counts including second-degree attempted murder.

Holly’s murder charge was rejected by the Union Parish Grand Jury in April, which potentially provided a path for the running back to rejoin the LSU program. But during his Thursday press conference, Kelly revealed Holly’s status with the team is out of his hands.

“Obviously, we’ve followed Trey’s situation legally and there’s not much that we can do. We hope for resolution in the case, but this is out of our hands right now,” Kelly said.

Despite Holly’s murder charge being dropped, the Louisiana native still faces charges of illegal use of a weapon and aggravated criminal damage to property according to KNOE News. The prosecution recently turned over bodycam footage from the February incident that Holly was involved in that seriously injured a Union Country woman.

“This is a matter that needs to be handled through the courts,” Kelly added. “And once it’s cleared through the courts, then we’ll be able to make a decision on his status. Again, I think we’ve been pretty clear that he can’t play football here until the legal matters have been settled.”

Holly’s next hearing in the case is scheduled for December 18 in Union Parish, which makes his return to the LSU program this football season unlikely.

Holly attended Union Parish High School in Farmerville, Louisiana where he was a four-star prospect ranked the No. 17 running back and No. 261 overall player in the country for the 2023 recruiting class according to the On3 Industry Ranking. A weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

In his true freshman season at LSU, Holly received 11 carries for 110 yards and a touchdown. His future with the program will be worth monitoring as his case moves through the legal process.
