Brian Kelly defends strength of win over South Carolina

Brian Kelly defends strength of win over South Carolina

The script flipped on LSU‘s 2024 season in the second half against South Carolina. Had Brian Kelly lost in Columbia, there might have been some questions about where the program was headed following a 1-2 start. Instead, LSU found a way to emerge with a win and can now continue to build up their resume through SEC play.

Getting a result is one thing but plenty of head coaches will discuss the process. There were no doubt bad moments for LSU on Saturday, mainly on defense when South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers was in the game. Kelly is having none of it, though, citing how difficult winning on the road in the SEC is.

“We beat South Carolina on the road in a sold-out stadium in the SEC against a team that beat the pants off of Kentucky who played Georgia right to the end,” Kelly said. “So, if we want to do that game, I guess we’re going to beat Georgia by a lot if that’s how you guys want to play this thing.”

“The reality is, it’s hard to win on the road. Given the fact that we made a lot of mistakes, we still found a way to win that football game.”

Of Kelly’s five losses against SEC foes, four of them have been away from Tiger Stadium. One was not technically a road game as LSU fell to Georgia in the 2022 SEC Championship game in Atlanta. Alabama, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M have all taken the Tigers down in their home stadium with Kelly on the sideline.

Tennessee was the lone home SEC loss back in the first year of Kelly’s tenure.

So these are not the type of results where Kelly is going to spend a lot of time on the process. Especially with the number of young players LSU put onto the field while down by double digits. Nothing but positives coming from the head coach after the three-point win.

“That’s incredible resolve and resilience amongst your group. To keep your group, your young guys, together — we had a lot of freshmen out there. We had a lot of young guys playing and they kept playing, they kept believing. I can build off that. Do we want to play cleaner? Yes. But at the end of the day, that was a good South Carolina football team, a good defense.”

Nonconference play wraps up over the next two weeks with UCLA and South Alabama before a bye week. The SEC schedule then speeds up for LSU as three road games occur over the next five games. And the two coming to Baton Rouge are both currently ranked in the top five, Alabama and Ole Miss.

Certainly, there are areas where the Tigers can improve but Kelly is adamant about how good of a win this past Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium was.
