BREAKING: No. 4 QB Deuce Knight flips commitment from Notre Dame to Auburn

BREAKING: No. 4 QB Deuce Knight flips commitment from Notre Dame to Auburn

Four-star quarterback Deuce Knight has flipped his commitment from Notre Dame to Auburn.

Knight, who attends George County High School in Lucedale, Miss., announced his decision Wednesday on social media. He had been committed to Notre Dame since Sept. 18, 2023.

“Coach (Hugh) Freeze, he thinks we can both do some special things with the offense,” Knight told Auburn Live. “We are both Mississippi boys. He says to come over to Alabama and take over college football.”

Knight’s commitment to Auburn comes after an official visit this past weekend. It was the fourth visit to Auburn this season and fifth since July 31.

Freeze played a big role in Knight’s commitment. So did Kenyatta Watson, Auburn’s director of recruiting research and strategy.

Knight familiar with Auburn coaches, campus

Freeze and Knight both being from Mississippi helped form a long-lasting bond between the coach and recruit.

“Coach Freeze, he understands where I’m coming from,” Knight said. “He understands the place where I grew up; how you have to try and go get everything you want because [we’re] from Mississippi. The opportunities that you get, you have to make the most out of everything. So I feel like that is something we have in common. We both understand where we grew up.”

Knight also feels he will be a good fit in Freeze’s offensive system.

“I most definitely think that I could come in and fit really well in the offense,” he said. “When you try to look at schools, you look at who is in the quarterback room and past guys they have coached. Coach Freeze coached Malik Willis, who is now in the NFL. I think I do some similar things to Malik Willis.”

And it didn’t hurt that Cam Newton won a national title and Heisman Trophy at Auburn.

“Auburn, historically speaking, is a great place,” he said. “My favorite player of all time, that is where he went to school. Cam Newton.

“Auburn is a great place, great fans, it is going to be packed out every Saturday.”

Knight is ranked the No. 6 quarterback in the country, according to On3, and the No. 32 overall recruit. He also ranks as the No. 2 recruit in Mississippi.

Knight is the 25th commitment in Auburn’s 2025 class.

Knight’s On3 Scouting Report

Big left-handed signal caller who is the top athlete at the position in the 2025 cycle. Measured in at 6-foot-4.5, 208 pounds with a 9.75-inch hand at the On3 Elite Series prior to his senior season. Registers as a truly elite athlete at quarterback and one of the best athletes in the 2025 cycle, regardless of position.

Consistently runs in the 4.5 second range at camps and has posted multiple 40+ inch vertical leaps. Shows flashes of that athleticism on Friday nights. Capable of tucking the ball and taking it to the house from anywhere on the field. Easily eliminates the angles of pursuit defenders as a scrambler and on designed runs.

More on Knight from On3

Tough to bring down in the backfield with his size and reactive quickness. Touts a strong downfield arm. Flashes the ability to stick throws into tight windows over the middle of the field. Showed marked progress as a passer during the off-season prior to his senior year, after a few months of working with a private coach. Still developing, but has tons of upside to continue improving with continued coaching and in-game reps.

Had a disjointed junior season, transferring to Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, Tenn. before heading back to Greene County just a few games into the season. Needs to carry over his off-season progress onto the field on Friday nights. Will need to establish his improvements in accuracy while also continuing to better his decision-making and unlocking his immense potential as an athletic playmaker.

A three-sport standout with multiple state titles in the long jump and high jump in addition to playing basketball. Has one of the highest upsides regardless of position in the 2025 cycle, but is still considered a developmental prospect. Has the potential to see the field early in his college career in a specifically tailored offense. With continued development, has the potential to be a program changing type of quarterback with significant NFL upside.
