Ben Roethlisberger suggest Steelers stick with Justin Fields as starting QB: ‘I like what I’ve seen’

Ben Roethlisberger suggest Steelers stick with Justin Fields as starting QB: ‘I like what I’ve seen’

Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said on his “Footbahlin” podcast this week he believes that Justin Fields should remain Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback even if Russell Wilson is healthy.

With Wilson sidelined with a calf injury, Fields has started the first two games of the season, leading Pittsburgh to a 2-0 record. Roethlisberger has seen enough from Fields to have confidence in him to continue as QB1.

“I like what I’ve seen, I like that he’s getting into it, I like that he’s getting the feel of it,” Roethlisberger said, via Pro Football Talk. “If you told me they were 1-1 or 0-2 and these are going on, I’d think they’d have to do something, but again, he’s not turning the ball over, they’re 2-0. Big test this week with the Chargers coming to town. To me, if Russ is healthy, I’m sticking with Justin. I said it last week I wouldn’t, but what I saw [in Week Two]. I think that he has earned and deserves the right to stay there.”

While the Steelers have scored just one touchdown in two games, Fields has shown improvement from his previous three seasons with the Chicago Bears. He has completed 69.8% of his passes, throwing for 273 yards and one score. Most importantly, Fields hasn’t thrown an interception and has only taken four sacks. Fields has continued to be a threat with his legs, picking up 84 yards on the ground.

Justin Fields pushing to keep QB1 job

The stats don’t necessarily pop, but’s that’s of no concern to Roethlisberger, who ultimately knows it’s about doing enough to win games.

“Justin’s stats, nothing crazy, 117 yards, are you impressed? Probably not,” Roethlisberger said. “You know what I’m impressed with? No turnovers. I’m impressed with efficiency. I thought he ran the ball when he had to, he did some really good things.”

Fields has done enough to get the win through two games, and should it remain the same this Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers (2-0), head coach Mike Tomlin might have a tough decision to make.
