West Virginia safety Aubrey Burks had to be taken off the field on a stretcher after an injury in the second quarter of Saturday’s game against Kansas. Burks was seen on the ground near the Mountaineers bench wearing a neck brace.

Sideline reporter Lauren Sisler revealed on the broadcast that it was a back injury for the WVU defender. He was taken to the hospital for further examination soon after.

“They’ve cleared the benches,” Sisler said. “They’ve got him laying on the ground with a neck brace. It looks to be a back injury. He looked to be in a lot of pain and struggling to move some of his extremities.”

Burks is a senior who is in his third year as a starter for the Mountaineers defense and is a team captain. He had two tackles in the game prior to exiting with injury.

It’s unclear exactly how Aubrey Burks suffered the injury, but we’ll certainly hope for the best as we await another update on the situation.

TJ Crandall exits game with injury moments after Burks

Unfortunately, West Virginia would suffer another blow to its defense as cornerback TJ Crandall went down a few moments later. Crandall collided with a teammate while trying to down a punt and remained on the ground for several moments.

He eventually got up and walked off under his own power, and it’s unclear exactly the nature of the injury.
