Tim Tebow breaks down Red River Showdown between Texas, Oklahoma: ‘Rivalry games are the great equalizer’
Not much else matters when it comes down to rivalry games. That plays in Oklahoma’s favor ahead of Red River tomorrow according to Tim Tebow.
Tebow spoke about the impact of games like the Red River Rivalry during ‘The Paul Finebaum Show’ on Friday. Despite the Sooners being a two-score underdog in Dallas on Saturday to No. 1 Texas, he says nothing coming into the matchup matters all that much considering how each team is going to approach it. That alone evens the playing field to some extent in any of these kinds of games.
“I think what you’re saying is rivalry games are the great equalizer,” said Tebow. “They’re not intimidated. Fear kind of goes out of the window, right. You’re just playing with passion. There’s a different level of sacrifice, a different level of what I’m willing to do in this game. They just raise your level of execution, raise your level of strain.”
The Red River Shootout is amongst the best of them all too when you’re talking about college football, let alone sports in general. Whether you’re thinking about the Texas State Fair or the crowd inside the Cotton Bowl, it’s distinct on its own – which only further proves Tebow’s point.
“This is a rivalry game that is surpassed by maybe no other game,” said Tebow. “The atmosphere, the environment, you know, all the people that are flying in that are excited about this from all over the country. It’s just different than most. I think players understand the magnitude of this game and they want to be the reason that their team won in this game. It’s not just about a game. It’s about a legacy.”
Oklahoma could absolutely lose tomorrow to the top-ranked team in the country. Still, with the context and the history of the game added into it, Tebow isn’t counting anything out in regards to the debut of the Red River Showdown in the SEC.
“Rivalry games? Crazy things happen,” said Tebow. “They just do.”
