Kalen DeBoer reveals nerves after Ryan Williams 75-yard touchdown catch vs. Georgia: ‘We left too much time’
Ryan Williams won the game for Alabama on Saturday as broke free from a pair of defenders on his way to a 75-yard touchdown catch. The play put the Crimson Tide back on top against Georgia after giving up what was at one point a four-touchdown lead.
The score from Williams happened on the first play after Alabama gave up a 67-yard touchdown to Georgia. Jalen Milroe took a shot in the receiver’s direction, and Williams made a pair of moves after the catch to escape the tackle as he scampered into the end zone.
However, as DeBoer explained Wednesday on The Paul Finebaum Show, he would have preferred to take more time off the clock on that drive. The Crimson Tide gave the ball back to the Bulldogs with 2:31 remaining, which had the coach nervous near the end.
“I think the play before, the two-point conversion, was something I felt was really key too,” DeBoer said. “Our guys, even in the midst of giving up a touchdown defensively, we lined back up and we get the stop there. What that does is it tells you a field goal can win it. So, to me, at that time, there’s so much time on the clock. It’s not gonna be about time. It’s gonna be about putting some plays together and just getting some connections. Letting our guys just execute and do their thing.
“But when Jalen identified Ryan one-on-one, and just something that we’ve been working on a lot is being able to throw the ball down the field. Those two connected and then Ryan just doing his thing. Then the next thought is, ‘We left too much time on the clock.’ That’s an eternity nowadays with the two-minute warming, three timeouts. I don’t get too nervous about things until there’s about a minute or so to go. So that was a lot of time that was left on the clock, but you’re never gonna argue against guys doing what they did there in that moment.”
Georgia drove all the way down to the Alabama 20-yard line with 43 seconds left on the clock as the tension continued to rise inside of Bryant-Denny Stadium. Thankfully, the Crimson Tide defense came up with an interception in the end zone to seal the game.
In the end, it was that and the touchdown from Ryan Williams that prevented Alabama from losing a game it once led by four touchdowns. The true freshman has been impressive this season, leading the team with 462 yards receiving and five touchdowns.
Although DeBoer might have envisioned giving Georgia with less time to work with at the end, it’s hard to argue with the result. The Crimson Tide improved to 4-0 as they head to Vanderbilt next week.
