Jalen Milroe spotlights ‘trust’ in Ryan Williams on Alabama game-winning touchdown vs. Georgia

Jalen Milroe spotlights ‘trust’ in Ryan Williams on Alabama game-winning touchdown vs. Georgia

Saturday night’s AlabamaGeorgia game will forever rest in college football history. It was without a doubt, one of the most entertaining games of the 2024 season. While Alabama jumped out to an early 30-7 lead, the Bulldogs stormed back in the fourth quarter, taking the lead at 34-33. But Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe found freshman star wideout Ryan Williams on one of the plays that will forever rest in SEC and college football history.

Milroe managed to connect with Williams on a 75-yard touchdown toss, in what ended up being the game-winning score. It was one of the most spectacular plays the sport has seen. Williams somehow spun, managed to stay in bounds, and elude a couple of Georgia defenders down the field for the game-winning touchdown. It gave the Crimson Tide a 41-34 lead after a two-point conversion.

Shortly after the game, Jalen Milroe spoke with Holly Rowe on the field about the spectacular touchdown pass to Williams. “It was all about matchups. Find your one-on-one. Find your matchups. And go play as something we call pass to pass in practice. Repetition. Repetition. That’s so important. It’s all about trust. And I trusted Ryan Williams and I gave him the play,” Milroe explained.

Ryan Williams also delivered a performance that won’t soon be forgotten. Six catches for 177 yards, including the game-winning 75-yard touchdown catch that’ll forever cement him a special place in Alabama football history.

How does the massive win over Georgia fuel the Crimson Tide’s momentum moving forward? “I think it’s so important though. We want to keep building. You know? Not one game can be our best game. We’ve just got to keep climbing. Keep getting better. I think that’s so important for our team,” Milroe continued.

Milroe delivered a performance for the ages, completing 27 of 33 passes for 374 yards, while tossing in two touchdowns with one interception. As a runner, he had 16 carries for 117 yards and two touchdowns. After a performance like that, it’ll be easy to picture him vaulting to the front of the Heisman race this year.

What was going through his head in the final seconds of the game, when the Crimson Tide snatched the game-winning interception? “The biggest thing that we have on our team is grit, determination, and commitment from everyone on our team. Offense, defense, on all cylinders. We’ve got trust in one another. And it’s so important when we play great teams like Georgia. We knew it was going to be a four quarter ballgame. It’s all about trusting in our level of training and rising to the occasion. It’s all very important,” Milroe explained.

“Proud of our offense. Proud of our defense. Just tossing the ball and attacking,” the Alabama dual-threat noted.

Milroe finished the game with having great accuracy on his passes. He started out the game being dynamic with his feet in the open field. How does he balance both skill sets? “I think the biggest thing is the eye discipline. And it all factors into practice. Coach DeBoer talks about eye discipline, being keyed into your details. I think that’s so important when you’re playing a team like this [Georgia]. And then falling back to practice and building upon that. So, I think that’s so important. It was a key factor to our success today,” Milroe explained.
