Head coaches: Stanford — Troy Taylor (5-12; second season at Stanford; Notre Dame — Marcus Freeman (23-9, third season at Notre Dame)
2024 team records: Fighting Irish — 4-1 (W, 23-13 at Texas A&M; L, 16-14 vs. NIU; W, 66-7 at Purdue; W, 28-3 vs. Miami University; W, 31-24 vs. Louisville) Cardinal — 2-3 (L, 34-27 vs. TCU; W, 41-7 vs. Cal Poly; L, 40-14 at Clemson; L, 31-7 vs. Virginia Tech)
Noting Notre Dame: The only way the Fighting Irish live down the letdown against Northern Illinois is if they keep winning ballgames they should win. This is one of those. Marcus Freeman is 3-0 coming out of bye weeks, including a 58-7 win over Pittsburgh and a 45-7 romp of Wake Forest last year. That is the kind of result Notre Dame is looking for this week.
Noting Stanford: The Cardinal’s defense is gettable, as it’s been for a few seasons now. Stanford gave up 457 yards to TCU and 405 to Clemson. The offense takes a significant step back if quarterback Ashton Daniels isn’t able to play, too; Stanford only gained 258 yards in a loss to Virginia Tech without him. It’s a mismatch on both sides of the ball for the underdog Card.
