Davante Adams trade rumors: Stephen Jones addresses Cowboys chances of landing star WR
Earlier this week, Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams reportedly requested a trade. On Thursday, Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones revealed whether the organization would be interested in acquiring Adams.
“No. I don’t think there is anything to that,” Jones said, per The Athletic‘s Jon Machota. “We just signed our No. 1 guy (CeeDee Lamb) and (Adams) is a No. 1 receiver. When you have the challenges cap-wise that we have, that would be a long putt for us.”
In August, the Cowboys signed CeeDee Lamb to a four-year, $136 million extension. At the time, the contract made Lamb the second-highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.
If the Cowboys wanted to add Adams to their team, they’d have to be willing to open their pocketbooks. According to NBC, Adams’ salary this season is $16.89 million. If a team trades for him now, the cap charge for his salary will be 14/18ths — $13.13 million. Each week, it will drop by another $938,333.
However, Davante Adams’ salary will jump to $35.64 million, making a long-term relationship with the three-time All-Pro extremely difficult. According to SportsTrac, the Cowboys currently have $25 million in cap space, the seventh-most in the NFL.
While the organization could perhaps swing a deal with Adams for one season, it must take into consideration its needs and upcoming contracts. Even if the Cowboys were interested in Adams, ESPN’s Adam Schefter claims the WR isn’t going anywhere for a while.
“There continues to be a belief around the league that it’s only a matter of time before Davante Adams is traded to another team,” Schefter said on Thursday. “And that time doesn’t appear to be happening before Week 5 kicks off. Because Davante Adams has a lingering, legitimate hamstring injury that he suffered in practice one week ago that he’s still recovering from.
“It doesn’t sound like teams are in a rush to trade for a player when they have to pay him an additional roughly million dollars each week he doesn’t play, when he can’t play right now due to the hamstring injury.”
