Coaches Poll Top 25 College Football Rankings released after Week 8
The latest Coaches Poll Top 25 rankings are in following Week 8 of college football and there were definitely some changes, as expected.
Georgia highlighted Saturday evening with a win over Texas on the road to shake up the SEC. It’s getting very interesting as we are firmly in the second half of the season.
Let’s dive into the latest Coaches Poll Top 25 rankings following Week 8.
1. Oregon (+1)
The Oregon Ducks left no doubt on Friday night with a 35-0 win over Purdue. That was on the heels of a home win over Ohio State in epic fashion.
Dillon Gabriel was 21 of 25 passing for 290 yards, two touchdowns and a pick. Jordan James added 50 yards on the ground on just 10 carries, along with two touchdowns as Oregon improved to 7-0.
2. Georgia (+2)
Georgia faced a lot of questions and Texas had a lot of answers going into this past weekend. Well, flip that. The Bulldogs got their biggest win of the season, winning 30-15 on the road over the Longhorns.
Carson Beck was picked off three times, but Georgia’s suffocating defense set them up with a 23-0 lead at halftime. Trevor Etienne had 87 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
3. Penn State
The Nittany Lions had a week off following an overtime win over USC on the road. Given two weeks to prepare for Wisconsin and Ohio State? Much needed.
Penn State is undefeated and is still one of the quieter teams high up in the rankings. There’s a lot of buzz around Oregon and Ohio State but this could be the year for Penn State.
4. Ohio State (+1)
The Buckeyes needed the week off after losing to Oregon on the road. But Ohio State is still in a great position to win the Big Ten and get a high seed in the playoff.
First, it’s a date with Nebraska before taking on Penn State in one of the more anticipated games in the conference. One loss doesn’t change the outlook on this team.
5. Miami (+1)
Miami had to deal with more heart palpitations as the Hurricanes beat Louisville 52-45. The ACC’s top squad improved to 7-0 on the season.
Cam Ward was a star again, throwing for 319 yards and four touchdowns while Damien Martinez ran for 89 and had a score. Miami will host Florida State, who’s on a downward spiral, next week.
6. Texas (-5)
The Texas Longhorns lost their first game of the season, dropping one 30-15 to Georgia. Is there a QB controversy?
Steve Sarkisian said no despite subbing in Arch Manning in the second quarter but then putting Quinn Ewers back in for a rally. He might’ve unintentionally rocked the boat.
7. LSU (+1)
LSU won its sixth game in a row to improve to 6-1 on the season with a 34-10 win over Arkansas on the road. Caden Durham was the star of the show, scoring three touchdowns while running for 101 yards.
LSU will get a ranked matchup next weekend at Texas A&M. Both of these are 6-1 following a season opening loss so all eyes on College Station!
8. Tennessee (+2)
Tennessee won its rivalry game over Alabama 24-17 to improve to 6-1 and give Alabama its second SEC loss of the year. The Vols forced two Jalen Milroe interceptions and scored all 24 points in the second half.
It was a massive victory no doubt. Tennessee must suddenly like its path to the SEC Championship and College Football Playoff. Four more SEC games and a non-conference with the one game circled against Georgia. It’s going to get fun.
9. Clemson
Clemson needed a lot of points in this one, a 48-31 win over Virginia. Still, the Tigers have now won six games in a row after everyone questioned Dabo Swinney after opening weekend.
It was another solid outing for Cade Klubnik, who threw for 308 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. A bye week is next before Clemson hosts Louisville.
10. Iowa State (+2)
Phew, take a breath Cyclone fans. That was a close one. Iowa State improved to 7-0 on the season with a 38-35 win over UCF.
Rocco Becht threw two interceptions, but he threw a touchdown and ran for two more, in addition to 97 yards on the ground. Carson Hansen helped him out with two touchdowns and 91 rushing yards.
