Sherrone Moore will reevaluate Michigan quarterbacks – again – after loss at Illinois 

The wheels have come off the 2024 Michigan football team’s wagon, and there doesn’t seem to be an adequate replacement for the most important. Quarterback Jack Tuttle was the latest Wolverine to struggle behind center, going 20-for-32 for 208 yards and an interception in the red zone in a 21-7 loss at Illinois, also losing a fumble.

Most of his yardage came when the Wolverines were playing from behind, 129 in the fourth quarter against a soft Illinois defense. He was off on many throws, didn’t read pressure well, and looked … well, similar to Alex Orji and Davis Warren in his inability to move the team or protect the ball. 

“Just overall, offensively it was not good enough, at all,” Moore said. “It was disappointing in a lot of areas. Jack can’t turn the ball over. We’ve got to get the guys that when they’re open, we’ve got to complete those passes. We’ve just got to be better.”

We asked Moore specifically if the competition would be open this week. 

“Yeah, I mean … you can’t turn the ball over. You don’t want to go to four quarterbacks,” Moore said. “You don’t want to have to go through this process. But you’ve got to have a guy who is going to take care of the football. So, we’re going to see what we’ve got to do, and we’ll have that conversation as we go. 

“… We’ll just see. We’ll see how the week goes. We’ve just got to take care of the football, so we’ll figure that out when we get back to Ann Arbor.”

It’s clear, though, that the Michigan coaches overestimated their room. ESPN analyst and former Wolverine Desmond Howard confirmed what we said this summer — that Tuttle was going to be the guy before he got hurt. Warren started the season and turned it over, Orji couldn’t move the team, and Tuttle finally returned. He’s now turned it over four times in two games. 

Overall, the offense is one of the worst in recent Michigan history and near the bottom of the NCAA stats in too many categories to count.

“I think we just have to reevaluate and see and look,” Moore said of the disappointment. “We had a bye week. I feel disappointed in myself as the head coach, that we didn’t come out and execute at a better level. There are too many bits and pieces, not enough consistency. So, I have to look at myself, too.”
