FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Tennessee appears to be down two wide receivers after the fourth-ranked Vols were upset 19-14 by Arkansas Saturday night at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. 

Bru McCoy was injured in the first half and appeared to have his right hand in either a cast or heavy wrap on the Tennessee sideline in the second half. Squirrel White was in a sling after leaving the game with an injury in the second half. 

“I don’t (have an update),” Tennessee coach Josh Heupel said during his postgame press conference. “We’ll see as we go.”

Tennessee (4-1, 1-1 SEC) struggled to get anything going consistently on offense. Nico Iamaleava completed 16 of 28 passes for 156 yards. The Vols rushed 36 times for 176 yards, with Dylan Sampson going for 140 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. 

Sampson scored twice in the third quarter to build a 14-3 lead after the Vols trailed 3-0 at halftime.

“Disappointing night for us as a football team,” Heupel said. “I didn’t think we handled, or started fast. Didn’t do the ordinary things at a high level. Offensively, hurt ourselves consistently there in the first half. They were able to extend some drives, some third-down conversions. End of the day, starting with me, it wasn’t good enough tonight.

“And between all three phases, we’ve got to find a way to be on the right side of the scoreboard. And we got to get better. So at this point you got an opportunity to come together, pull harder, fight stronger, play for each other and continue to grow. Still a lot out there, obviously, as everybody sees. But the main thing is we got to continue to get better.”

McCoy caught two passes for nine yards. He got hit near the Arkansas sideline late in the first half, checking himself out of the game after coming up slow after the play. 

White caught a team-high seven passes for 38 yards before leaving with his injury. He entered the game with eight catches for 121 yards entering Saturday night’s game. 

Bru McCoy was lost to a season-ending leg injury last year

McCoy entered Saturday night’s game with 12 catches for 200 yards. He had a season-high six catches for 89 yards in the 69-3 season-opening win over Chattanooga on August 31. He caught two passes for 19 yards over Tennessee’s next two games, wins over North Carolina State and Kent State, and had four catches for a season-high 92 yards two weeks ago at Oklahoma. 

He was lost last September to a season-ending leg injury in a home win over South Carolina. He had 17 catches for 217 yards and a touchdown in five games before suffering the injury.

McCoy caught 52 passes for 667 yards and four touchdowns in 12 games in 2022, when he made his debut with the Vols after transferring from Southern California.
