Vanderbilt makes history with stunning upset of No. 1 Alabama

Vanderbilt makes history with stunning upset of No. 1 Alabama

Alabama spent all week looking to avoid the trap game/rat poison heading into the Vanderbilt game. A huge win against Georgia made national headlines for days and was even talked about on Saturday. And with a dangerous team, led by Diego Pavia, a tough game was ahead of the Crimson Tide.

Well, the mindset Kalen DeBoer tried to instill in his team fell a little short. Vanderbilt came out on with a ton of confidence, controlled the clock, and pulled off a historic upset against Alabama. Down goes the No. 1 ranked team in college football — a massive victory for Clark Lea and his program.

“I’m proud of our team,” Lea said postgame as fans stormed the field. “I believe in our team, I believe in what we’re building. There’s more for us than this. This isn’t the finishing point but it’s a hell of an arrival. Tonight, we’ll celebrate it. I love this university, I love this team. Let’s go get some more.”

Pavia was the star of the show and was in complete control of the Vanderbilt offense. He threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns while completing 16 of 20 passes. On the ground, Pavia ran for 56 yards and continually found a way to pick up critical third downs for the Commodores.

“It’s literally all God’s timing,” Pavia said. “Literally, from the jump. God gave me a vision when I was a little kid. … It’s God’s timeline. I’m super thankful. Super thankful for guys like Eli Stowers. Man, that kid’s are incredible. The rest of our team. I mean, look at this. Vandy, we’re fucking turnt!”

This is the first top-five win for Vanderbilt, previously being 0-60. A lot of highly-ranked teams have come through Nashville and taken care of business but not Alabama.

On the flip side, Alabama has lost just three times as the No. 1 team to unranked opponents. Georgia Tech in 1962 was the first, while Mississippi State took them down in 1980. Vanderbilt is the latest and now takes the place of Texas A&M, who got a big upset win under head coach Jimbo Fisher.
