Kevin Jennings injury: SMU QB leaves game vs. Louisville, replaced by Preston Stone

Kevin Jennings injury: SMU QB leaves game vs. Louisville, replaced by Preston Stone

SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings left the game with an apparent injury during the first quarter of the Mustangs’ game against Louisville on Saturday. He was able to return on the next drive.

It occurred on a 22-yard quarterback scramble. Jennings popped up and was walking around on the sideline before the next play. However, he had to be replaced by backup Preston Stone for at least one play — which ended with a 10-yard touchdown connection from Stone to Key’Shawn Smith.

Stone was the original starter for the Mustangs to begin the season, but head coach Rhett Lashlee instead opted to start Jennings in favor of his dual-threat abilities.

Before Jennings left Saturday’s matchup against Louisville, he was 4 of 4 passing for 86 yards to go with three rushes for 32 yards. The Cardinals didn’t have an answer for him during the first two drives, and Stone was able to come in and clean up the drive.

When SMU took the field for its third drive, Stone was back on the sideline and Jennings was back out on the field. Mission accomplished for Stone, who gets to add an extra throw to his highlight tape, and SMU fans can rest assured their QB1 is healthy.

Louisville DB Devin Neal leaves program, expected to enter transfer portal

Ahead of Saturday’s matchup, Louisville defensive back Devin Neal has left the Cardinals’ program, sources tell On3. He is expected to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

Neal is in his fifth year of college football and played in all four of Louisville’s games in 2024 before opting out of the season. He spent three years at Baylor before transferring to Louisville ahead of last season.

A native of Lexington, KY, Neal attended one of the most prolific high schools in the state, Frederick Douglass. As a three-star recruit, he did not receive any offers from his home state schools and elected to attend Baylor, his only Power Five offer at the time. Cincinnati (not yet in the Big 12), Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan were the only other teams to have offered him, according to his On3 recruiting profile.
