Texas checks in on 2025 5-star cornerback Devin Sanchez

Texas checks in on 2025 5-star cornerback Devin Sanchez

This June, while some fans were worried about defensive back recruiting, IT reported there were at least three surprises in the secondary that might take some time to play out. These scenarios weren’t guaranteed to play out in UT’s favor, but they did indicate Texas was content to play the long game at the position. That shouldn’t be surprising, that has been the M.O. at defensive back recruiting since Terry Joseph arrived. Actually, it’s been the M.O. of Steve Sarkisian as well.

Surprise No. 1 did go in Texas’ favor. That was five-star safety Jonah Williams. IT knew in early June that A) Williams liked Texas more than what was being reported, and B), that Texas was very likely to steal Texas A&M baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle.

Surprise No. 2 just went public. Again, there is no guarantee this will work out in UT’s favor, but Sark and Joseph just landed at North Shore High School.

North Shore is the home of five-star cornerback Devin Sanchez. Sanchez is essentially Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man of cornerback prospects.

Logic tells me this recruitment has a long, long way to go. Sanchez has been committed to Ohio State since January 6, 2024. Not only has he been committed for 10 months, the Buckeyes won his commitment resoundingly. He’ll also be in Columbus this weekend for Ohio State’s game against versus Iowa. The Buckeyes have a really good defense but they’ll look like the ’85 Bears against the Hawkeyes.

For months it has seemed impossible Texas would let such a talented player leave the state without a fight. Now it seems like the fight has begun, though RD 1 starts with Texas receiving a standing eight count.

Hey, at least they’re in the ring and I look forward to covering how it plays out.

Surprise No. 3? We’ll discuss that at the right time.
