Dabo Swinney on preparing for Florida State’s plan at QB: ‘They’re gonna do what they do’

Dabo Swinney on preparing for Florida State’s plan at QB: ‘They’re gonna do what they do’

Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney is preparing for a new quarterback as the Florida State Seminoles turn to Brock Glenn.

The change comes amid an injury to struggling starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei. A former Clemson quarterback himself, Uiagalelei is someone who Dabo Swinney knows very well. With that, Swinney knows he’s going to need to prepare for a quarterback who he knows significantly less about.

“I think they’re gonna do what they do,” Dabo Swinney said. “We’ve got two really full games to study him and watch him for sure and see a good amount of tape on him, but I think you just prepare for what they do.”

DJ Uiagalelei, a former starter at Clemson in his own right, has struggled on the field this season for Florida State. He was then knocked out of the Seminoles’ most recent game when they played against SMU with an injured hand. He’ll be out for a few weeks at least.

Brock Glenn stepped in to replace DJ Uiagalelei, just as he did last season when there were quarterback injuries and transfers ahead of him on the depth chart at Florida State. Now, after playing in six career games, he has a 34.5 completion percentage for 229 yards with two interceptions.

“He’s a good runner,” Swinney said. “He can throw the ball. They’re not gonna ask him to do anything different. Only thing I can say is they may do a little bit of Wildcat like you saw in the ACC Championship Game. Maybe that’s a little bit, little extra that we prepare for. But, I mean, they’re gonna run their offense. That’s why he’s there.”

After playing his high school football at Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis, Tennessee, Brock Glenn went to Florida State as a three-star recruit in the Class of 2023. He was the 29th-ranked quarterback in that recruiting cycle.

“They recruited him there to — they, obviously, loved him as a player and they’ve been growing him and developing him and he’s got some experience,” Swinney said. “So, I’m sure they have all the confidence in the world in him.”

The expectation was that this was going to be a relatively emotional game as Dabo Swinney prepared to take on his former quarterback. However, with DJ Uiagalelei out, the focus needs to be on stopping the things that Brock Glenn does well.

Brock Glenn shares help DJ Uiagalelei provides in preparation

Ahead of his start against Clemson, Brock Glenn shared how DJ Uiagalelei is helping him to prepare for the game.

“DJ’s been awesome in the film study,” Glenn said. “He’s been awesome. He sees the game really clear. And he’s obviously a vet. He’s been in this game for a while, so he knows what to expect, and he knows some tricks here and there to show and help speed up your mind.”
