NC State DE Red Hibbler reportedly plans to enter transfer portal

NC State DE Red Hibbler reportedly plans to enter transfer portal

NC State removed defensive end Red Hibbler from its online roster following the Wolfpack’s loss to Clemson earlier this fall. He plans to redshirt and enter the transfer portal in December, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Thursday morning.

Hibbler appeared in the Wolfpack’s first four games of the 2024 season, recording 6 total tackles. The senior played 10 snaps against Clemson— his final game in an NC State uniform before he decided to cut his season short. Following his redshirt, the explosive edge rusher will have 1 season of eligibility remaining.

He is the one and only Wolfpack football player to shut down their season after four games played so far this year. Running back Jordan Houston and quarterback MJ Morris made similar decisions in 2023.

The lineman was the program’s primary pass-rushing specialist, coming into the game on most third downs. Hibbler led NC State in sacks last year with 6.5. The 6-2, 264-pound former junior college recruit joined the Pack in the 2023 class, spending 1 full season at NC State. He recorded 12 total tackles (8 solo) last fall and forced 2 fumbles.

After arriving on campus a little undersized for NC State’s three-man front, he added weight this offseason.

“Everything has been easier,” Hibbler said in August. “I can react faster, I can move. It’s kind of hard trying to move with this weight, but I’m able to do it. … It’s really just the weight, just trying to maintain it.”

Before joining the Pack, Hibbler was one of the top junior college recruits in the country out of Northwest Mississippi Community College. The lineman, hailing from Louisville, Mississippi, was the No. 13 prospect in the nation and the No. 3 defensive lineman.

In the Wolfpack’s first game without Hibbler, Davin Vann and Isaiah Shirley started at defensive end, with Travali Price and Noah Potter taking the backup reps. NC State recorded 4 sacks against Northern Illinois, doubling its season total, and 12 tackles for loss.
