Denny Hamlin offers open invitation to Carl Edwards to drive 23XI car when he ‘gets the itch’
Denny Hamlin wants to see Carl Edwards back in a Cup Series car if he returns to the track. On the Actions Detrimental podcast, Hamlin talked about offering an open invitation to the NASCAR legend to drive a car for 23XI Racing soon.
“I just told him whenever he’s ready just let me know,” Denny Hamlin said. “Whenever you get that itch. I think he’s publicly stated many times until they put horsepower back in these cars I’m not doing it.”
Edwards last competed in a NASCAR Cup Series race in 2016 and was with Joe Gibbs Racing at the time. He never won a Cup Series title but did win 28 Cup Series races and finished in the top 10 220 times in 445 races. In 2023, Edwards was named one of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers and will be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2025.
“The longer I’ve been away, I appreciate the sport more and more,” Edwards said earlier this year, per NASCAR.com. “Last year, just the honor of being part of those 75 (Greatest) drivers, it shocked me how much fun it was to come back to Darlington to be a part of that, and I guess what I’m trying to say is the longer I am away, the more I appreciate it. This honor is over the top. I did not expect this in any way. I was shocked. It’s been a huge deal to me, much bigger than I ever would have expected.”
Carl Edwards helps with Hurricane Helene recovery efforts
Edwards might not be ready to get back to racing, but that doesn’t mean he’s sitting at home relaxing. After driving the pace car at Kansas Speedway on Sunday, the 45-year-old was back in North Carolina assisting with recovery efforts. Edwards was helping deliver supplies to those in need after Hurricane Helene.
“Hey, good morning,” Edwards said on the news broadcast. “So, North Carolina’s done so much for me, the NASCAR community has done so much for me. NASCAR is represented well here. Greg Biffle, Cleetus McFarland, Brad Womble. For me, it’s about bringing these folks, Gideon Rescue Company.
“I’ve been inspired by these folks and I’ve got to introduce you them. This is Gideon Rescue Company, these are the dogs. We know that a lot of people are struggling, a lot of people are in need of these dogs to help them find their loved ones. So, it’s just an honor to be able to serve with them.”
