Chase Briscoe racing in Tony Stewart throwback scheme for Talladega playoff race

Chase Briscoe racing in Tony Stewart throwback scheme for Talladega playoff race

This Sunday for the Talladega playoff race, Chase Briscoe will be in a Rush Truck Centers throwback paint scheme, honoring Tony Stewart. As Stewart-Haas Racing winds down its final season ever, this classic NASCAR scheme is coming back.

Chase Briscoe has been very good in these playoffs. He made it out of the Round of 16 despite being under the cutline entering the postseason. The start to the Round of 12 has not been so great, with Briscoe -25 points.

The Rush Truck Centers No. 14 car is going to look awesome on the track. Longtime fans of Smoke will enjoy seeing this one back on the track.

If Chase Briscoe does not make it out of the Round of 12, this will still be a good note to go out on for SHR. Briscoe has done all that he can to make sure that this organization has the chance at one more championship.

Kansas was not his best race. Then again, Kansas has historically not been his best track, so it tracks with the rest of his career. But Talladega and the Roval give Briscoe two real chances to earn points or a win and make the Round of 12.

If this is the round he goes out on, it will be fitting to do it with this paint scheme as part of the process. Tony Stewart, even if he isn’t heavily involved now, will always be an integral part of NASCAR’s history.

Will Chase Briscoe find his inner Smoke and win at Talladega in this throwback scheme?

Chase Briscoe having similar season to 2022

If you look at Chase Briscoe’s 2022 season, the only other time he made the postseason, this year looks familiar. Now, the races have shifted around and the schedule looks a little different than it did back then. But it is awfully familiar.

Those playoffs, Briscoe scraped by in the Round of 16. Then he rattled off finishes of P5, P10, and P9 in the Round of 12. Those three races, Texas, Talladega, and the Roval, pushed Briscoe into the Round of 8.

The similarities I’m seeing in that season and this one is the improved results coming out of the regular season. Again, the schedule looks a bit different and it isn’t a one-to-one comparison. But there is a real chance, like in 2022, Briscoe goes into the Roval with a chance to advance on points or to get cut, depending on his performance.

NASCAR fans will remember that Chase Briscoe was involved in a controversy in those 2022 playoffs at the Roval. Cole Custer was accused of trying to manipulate the results to get Briscoe into the Round of 8. NASCAR found his efforts did not change the outcome of the elimination race, but Custer’s team was fined and penalized heavily.
