Paul Finebaum identifies the biggest problem for Kirby Smart, Georgia after Alabama loss

Paul Finebaum identifies the biggest problem for Kirby Smart, Georgia after Alabama loss

The Georgia Bulldogs acquitted themselves well in the loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide. Still, Paul Finebaum believes that head coach Kirby Smart and Georgia still have a major problem.

As Finebaum explained on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning, there’s a lot to be happy about if you’re Smart. At the same time, because of the loss, the Bulldogs now have a math problem moving forward.

“I don’t think there is fallout and I think the reaction from him deep down is I really like what I saw,” Paul Finebaum said. “That’s the team I’ve been trying to get to all year long. Everybody said it before the game. They start slow and they can’t do that. He’s got to figure that out, but I really liked what I saw from them in the second half. As you both know, the hardest thing in the world is to come from way back and get over the hump and usually, when you do you’re going to win the game, and in this case, it just took one play to undo that but it was a play of epic proportions.”

For all the good that came out of the game for Georgia, it was still a loss at the end of the day. That removes the margin for error moving forward if the Bulldogs want to go to the SEC Championship Game and make the College Football Playoff.

“The only problem Kirby Smart has now is a game of math,” Finebaum said. “We all knew he had a margin of error of two and now that is probably shrinking, but if you had said, ‘Kirby Smart, to get to the final game of the season after losing a game, all you have to do is lose one more game and you’re in the Playoff,’ he would probably say, ‘You know what? That’s pretty good, especially for a school that hasn’t lost in three years.’”

The upcoming schedule is going to be a challenge for Georgia. With three upcoming opponents ranked in the top 12 of the current AP Poll, the Bulldogs are going to need to find a way to start those games quicker. So, that’s going to be a challenge but one that comes with positives from the Alabama game to build on.

“So, I think Kirby Smart is feeling pretty good today in spite of everything,” Finebaum said.

For now, the next test for Georgia is going to be a rivalry game against the Auburn Tigers.
