Paul Finebaum: Ole Miss’ road got very ‘nerve-wracking’ after loss to Kentucky

Paul Finebaum: Ole Miss’ road got very ‘nerve-wracking’ after loss to Kentucky

In one of the most surprising results of the weekend, Ole Miss was upset in its SEC opener by Kentucky. With that, Paul Finebaum is concerned about the road ahead of Ole Miss this season.

It was during an appearance on The Matt Barrie Show when Finebaum explained that the game gave him doubts about Ole Miss, particularly given the schedule ahead.

“There are some doubts,” Paul Finebaum said. “A school that I have been incredibly high on is Ole Miss and I actually said on Saturday morning ‘Let’s quit propping up Kentucky because of a loss.’ Well, now we can prop them up because of a win, but that game was so much about Ole Miss and their road got very, very nerve-wracking.”

Coming into the season, there were analysts who thought Ole Miss’ schedule would be manageable and make it so they had a path to the College Football Playoff. From here, the Rebels have three games against teams currently ranked in the AP Top 25 Poll. They’ll enter those games without the same margin for error they were expected to have.

“I told you a couple of weeks ago when we were talking about Florida that probably the one thing that would keep Lane Kiffin away from Florida would be being in the CFP,” Finebaum said. “I’d like to re-record that statement because he might be a little more available.”

Ole Miss has already played all of its non-conference games for the season, which was considered one of the easier non-conference schedules around. Now, there’s concern that the schedule didn’t have the Rebels prepared for the SEC slate.

“I think so,” Finebaum said. “Wake Forest was their game and they got nothing out of it. I don’t think they were ready for the physicality of Kentucky and it just seemed to undo them.”

Next week, Ole Miss will have a road game against South Carolina, a team that dominated Kentucky when those two teams met.

Danny Kanell reacts to Kentucky upsetting Ole Miss with spicy take

Following Kentucky’s win over Ole Miss, analyst Danny Kanell shared his reaction to the win.

“Blowing out a bunch of nobody’s does not make you a national title contender,” Kanell wrote on Twitter. “Ole Miss got exposed.”

Certainly, it’s a take that goes back to criticism of Ole Miss for its non-conference schedule. The Rebels have been a highly praised team this season but that success came against easier competition. Now, the team needs to turn it around quickly in SEC play.
