Ohio High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams — September 29

Ohio High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams — September 29

The Ohio high school football rankings have updated after an eventful month of games as September comes to a close.

Glenville earned the upset of the week with a 28-27 victory over three-time defending champion St. Edward. Moeller, St. Xavier and Ursuline also all came away with wins over ranked opponents.

Below is the updated Ohio On3 Massey Ratings top 25, as of Sept. 29.

The On3 Massey Ratings — which were officially used during the BCS era and have generated college high school sports team rankings since 1995 — rank sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory.

1. Archbishop Hoban

Previous Ranking: No. 2 (+1)
With losses from St. Edward and Massillon the last two weeks, Hoban has slowly worked its way back up to the top of the Ohio high school football rankings. The Knights are 5-1 — their only loss coming to Spalding (Md.) in week one. Since then, Hoban has rattled off wins against Don Bosco Prep (N.J.), Buchtel, Akron East, St. Ignatius and Mount Vernon — the latter by a 56-13 score. Hoban has the No. 1 defense in Ohio, led by elite junior cornerback Elbert Hill. The Knights offense is also among the best in the state with the likes of four-star offensive tackle Sam Greer and four-star wide receiver Payton Cook. Up next for Hoban is perhaps the game of the week on the road at No. 8 Walsh Jesuit.

2. Archbishop Moeller

Previous Ranking: No. 4 (+2)
Moeller moves up to No. 2 in the state of Ohio after rattling off consecutive Greater Catholic League wins over St. Xavier and LaSalle. The Crusaders smacked the LaSalle Lancers 38-0 this past weekend to improve to 5-1 on the season. Moeller’s final GCL South matchup is on deck this Friday against No. 15 Elder.

3. Massillon Washington

Previous Ranking: No. 1 (-2)
After taking the top slot in the state last week, Massillon Washington fell slightly in this week’s rankings after losing to DeMatha Catholic (Md.) It was the Tigers’ second loss of the season, joining an early-season loss to Bergen Catholic — the No. 1 team in New Jersey. Massillon is now 4-2 with a top-5 offense and defense in the Buckeye State. The Tigers will continue their quest for a repeat Division II title this week against Edison.

4. Avon

Previous Ranking: No. 5 (+1)
Avon remained perfect on the year with a 35-14 win over Olmsted Falls on the road Friday. Four-star athlete Jakob Weatherspoon and Cincinnati defensive line commit Jeremiah Kelly headline a squad that ranks No. 9 in offense and No. 12 in defense in the state of Ohio. The Eagles will host Berea-Midpark this week.

5. Marion Local

Previous Ranking: No. 6 (+1)
Division VII Marion Local continued its multi-year winning streak this week with a 48-0 win over previously top-50 Versailles. The Flyers have been unstoppable this season, outscoring opponents 232-22. They are big favorites once again this week at home against Fort Recovery.

6. St. Xavier

Previous Ranking: No. 9 (+3)
St. Xavier improved to 4-2 this week with a Greater Catholic League win over Elder, beating the Panthers 22-17. The Bombers’ two losses on the year came to No. 11 Lakota West in week one and No. 2 Moeller last week. They have wins against Centerville, Indianapolis Cathedral (Ind.), Withrow and now Elder. Up next for St. X and Chase Herbstreit is Trinity (Ky.) before closing out GCL play against No. 25 LaSalle next week.

7. Anderson

Previous Ranking: No. 10 (+3)
Anderson stayed perfect with a dominant 57-6 win over Milford on the road. The Raptors offense ranks No. 2 in Ohio — scoring at least 40 points in every game, and at least 50 in four out of six weeks. UCF tight end commit Caden Piening is a big target at 6-foot-4.5, 245 pounds. Next up is Turpin at home.

8. Walsh Jesuit

Previous Ranking: No. 7 (-1)
Walsh Jesuit will play in the featured game this week when the Warriors host No. 1 Hoban on Friday. Walsh Jesuit is coming off of a 20-12 win over Benedictine, improving to 6-0 on the year. The Warriors rank near the bottom of the top 25 in defense, but boast a top-10 offense in the Buckeye State.

9. Toledo Central Catholic

Previous Ranking: No. 8 (-1)
Toledo Central Catholic improved to 5-1 with a narrow 27-26 win over St. Ignatius over the weekend. The only loss for the Irish came in week three against Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.) — the top-ranked team in the Mitten State. Since that loss, Central Catholic has collected wins against Brother Rice (Mich.), De La Salle Collegiate (Mich.) and St. Ignatius. This week, the Irish are big favorites against St. John’s Jesuit.

10. St. Edward

Previous Ranking: No. 3 (-7)
The three-time defending state champion St. Edward Eagles have dropped consecutive games in a surprising turn of events for the perennial best team in Ohio. Two weeks ago, St. Ed lost to Massillon Washington 31-21. This week, the Eagles were upset by Division IV Glenville, 28-27. Now 3-3 on the year, St. Edward will look to bounce back this week against bitter rival St. Ignatius. No. 2 Moeller and No. 1 Hoban are still on the schedule down the stretch.
