Danny Kanell reveals top five Heisman Trophy candidates after Week 5

Danny Kanell reveals top five Heisman Trophy candidates after Week 5

After an exciting Week 5 of college football, CBS Sports analyst Danny Kanell revealed his list of Heisman Trophy candidates. He named five players whom he believes to be in contention for the award after more than a month of play.

Colorado star Travis Hunter led off the list as he has already led the Buffaloes to four wins, tying their total from 2023. He has wowed fans with his play on both sides of the ball as a receiver and a cornerback.

After that, Kanell went with Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe at No. 2 on his list. He led the Crimson Tide to a victory against Georgia on Saturday after putting up yet another impressive performance.

1. CB/WR Travis Hunter, Colorado

Hunter is one of few players in college football history to play both offense and defense, joining his coach, Deion Sanders. He leads Colorado with 46 catches for 561 yards and six touchdowns, ranking second in the Big 12 in receiving yards.

It’s those numbers combined with his play on the other side of the ball that make him the top candidate to take home the Heisman this season. Hunter is often on the field for close to 130 snaps per game, as he also contributes on special teams.

2. QB Jalen Milroe, Alabama

Few players have scored with the consistency that Milroe has this season. He ranks tied for second in the country with 18 total touchdowns, having scored at least four in every game so far.

Milroe lead the Crimson Tide to a 41-34 victory against Georgia on Saturday in which he finished with two passing touchdowns as well as two rushing touchdowns. He completed 27-of-33 passes for 374 yards and also led the team with 117 yards rushing.

3. RB Ashton Jeanty, Boise State

Jeanty has put up video game-esque numbers early this season as he leads the country with 845 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns. He rushed for 259 yards — marking the second time this season he surpassed 250 yards in a game — and four touchdowns in a 45-24 win against Washington State this weekend.

The Broncos are a favorite to make it as the Group of 5 representative in the College Football Playoff if they can win the Mountain West Championship. If they do, Jeanty stands a chance to be a Heisman finalist based on his dominant performances thus far.

4. QB Cam Ward, Miami

Ward is the only player in the country with more total touchdowns than Milroe as he has 20 through the Hurricanes’ first five games. His 18 passing TDs lead the country and his 1,782 passing yards are the most in the ACC.

Miami ranks second in the country with 49.4 points per game and is off to its first 5-0 start in the past seven seasons. Ward has them as the favorite to win the conference and make the CFP, with a chance to claim some individual accolades as well.

5. QB Miller Moss, USC

Moss has proved more than a solid replacement for No. 1 pick Caleb Williams this season. He has the Trojans off to a 3-1 (1-1 Big Ten) start while throwing for 1,198 yards and eight touchdowns to only two interceptions.

Moss threw for three touchdowns in each of the past two games and only appears to be getting more comfortable as the year goes on. Lincoln Riley has coached many Heisman winners in his career, and Kanell believes Moss has a chance to be the next.
