Dan Mullen releases updated Top 25 after Week 5 of college football

Dan Mullen releases updated Top 25 after Week 5 of college football

After another riveting week in college football, ESPN analyst and former coach Dan Mullen released his updated Top 25 rankings.

One omission is sure to catch the eyes of his followers, with Mullen opting not to rank Ole Miss following the Rebels’ loss to Kentucky over the weekend. Mullen, of course, is a former Mississippi State coach.

In any case, let’s get to the rest of Dan Mullen’s top 25 below, starting with the top team in the country.

1. Alabama Crimson Tide

Alabama opened with a bang against No. 2 Georgia, shooting out to an early 28-0 lead in the contest at home. And though the Crimson Tide couldn’t quite sustain that momentum — Georgia would eventually come back to take the lead — they were able to get the job done.

Through the first major test of the season, Alabama should get a week or two to tune things up ahead of the next major showdown. That’ll be a road trip to No. 4 Tennessee on Oct. 19.

2. Texas Longhorns

Texas is off to a 5-0 start, though the schedule hasn’t been a murderer’s row just yet. A road win over Michigan, of course, provides a lot of the beef on the resume.

What’s most impressive is that the Longhorns have maintained their high level of play despite losing quarterback Quinn Ewers to an abdominal injury. Arch Manning has picked things up perfectly and continues to play at a high level.

3. Ohio State Buckeyes

Few teams are as talented at the skill positions as Ohio State. The Buckeyes have a two-man backfield that’s among the best in the nation, and they might have the best freshman skill player in America in Jeremiah Smith.

Next week will be an interesting test, with the always staunch defense of Iowa on tap. Then it’s a real showdown, a date at No. 6 Oregon in a game that will shape the Big Ten race. That game will determine whether Ohio State can retain its lofty spot in Dan Mullen’s top 25.

4. Tennessee Volunteers

The Volunteers were off this weekend after securing a really nice road win against a ranked Oklahoma squad a week ago. For Nico Iamaleava and company, the bye was a chance to get some extra rest and tweak anything that wasn’t great in the first four weeks of the season.

Tennessee could very well get to 6-0 before a date with No. 1 Alabama on Oct. 19. The Volunteers take on Arkansas on the road this week before hosting struggling Florida the following week.

5. Miami Hurricanes

Few teams faced as much drama this week as Miami, which had to wait on a last-second review to secure a win against Virginia Tech on Friday night. And it really could have gone either way.

But the call did go to the ‘Canes, so they stayed unbeaten at 5-0 and continue to cruise toward an ACC title track. Up next is a long road trip to California before a mid-season bye week.

6. Oregon Ducks

The Ducks have now won back-to-back games against power conference opponents on the road, first beating rival Oregon State and then taking out UCLA most recently. Both wins were quite convincing in nature.

The big game for Oregon that many had circled before the season began is close: a date with Ohio State on Oct. 12. First, though, a home date with Michigan State is on tap for this weekend.

7. Penn State Nittany Lions

Penn State hadn’t played a particularly difficult schedule to open the season, though a season-opening contest at West Virginia was decent enough. On Saturday, the Nittany Lions bested a ranked and previously unbeaten Illinois team.

The season continues to set up for Penn State to surprise in the Big Ten race, potentially. Up next are dates with the two LA-based teams. First UCLA at home and then a trip to take on No. 11 USC before a bye week.

8. Missouri Tigers

Missouri was off this weekend after surviving an overtime scare against Vanderbilt the week prior. That near miss kept Missouri perfect, in position to potentially claim a College Football Playoff spot.

The Tigers will get a good test now, though, with a chance to prove their positioning in Dan Mullen’s ranking is justified. Up this week is a road trip to College Station to take on a Texas A&M team that is looking better and better each week under first-year coach Mike Elko.

9. Georgia Bulldogs

Georgia wasn’t quite ready for the early onslaught on the road at Alabama, with the game nearly getting away from the Bulldogs before it began. But the team showed some real moxie to stay in the fight and even push for a fourth-quarter lead.

Ultimately Georgia came up short. But it’s a loss that won’t do much damage to the team’s chances, given that it was against the nation’s new No. 1 team and was on the road. Everything is still in front of Georgia.

10. Michigan Wolverines

Michigan has recovered nicely enough from that early season loss to Texas, reeling off three straight wins. None of them have been particularly convincing, but the Wolverines are playing to their identity as a grind-it-out type team.

Eventually the team will probably need a little more offensive firepower, but the schedule remains very manageable until November. Up next is a road trip to Washington.

Dan Mullen’s Top 25: 11-25

  1. BYU Cougars
  2. Clemson Tigers
  3. Indiana Hoosiers
  4. USC Trojans
  5. Kansas State Wildcats
  6. UNLV Rebels
  7. Duke Blue Devils
  8. LSU Tigers
  9. Iowa State Cyclones
  10. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
  11. Oklahoma Sooners
  12. Pittsburgh Panthers
  13. Rutgers Scarlet Knights
  14. Army Black Knights
  15. Navy Midshipmen

As mentioned above, perhaps the most notable omission from Dan Mullen’s top 25 is Ole Miss. The Rebels were ranked No. 12 in this week’s AP Poll but are not even in Mullen’s list. However, the rest of the list fairly closely resembles the AP poll. Notably, Mullen has a pair of service schools bringing up the rear this week.
