Paul Finebaum: ‘Does Alabama look better under Kalen DeBoer than Nick Saban?’

Paul Finebaum: ‘Does Alabama look better under Kalen DeBoer than Nick Saban?’

It’s never easy to replace a legend and, certainly, replacing Nick Saban as the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide wasn’t a small task. To this point, however, Kalen DeBoer has thrived in Tuscaloosa.

Coming off a win over Georgia, DeBoer is riding high. In fact, he has the team playing so well that analyst Paul Finebaum shared on SportsCenter that he thinks Alabama might look better under DeBoer than it did under Saban.

“There’s no way I’m going against Alabama no matter what you guys say this morning,” Paul Finebaum said. “It really just doesn’t matter. I am in on the Crimson Tide. What else can be said, I’ll keep going here, with this dominating performance. For one half, I might add. But they did what they had to do. I’m about to say something that may sound blasphemous here on a Sunday morning but, guys, I think I can say it to you because you’re men of great faith of college football, but does Alabama look better under Kalen DeBoer than Nick Saban?”

It’s obviously not realistic to compare the entire Nick Saban era to the first four games that Kalen DeBoer has coached. Saban’s run in Tuscaloosa included six different national championships and an overall record of 201-29 overall. At the same time, it’s hard not to be impressed with what DeBoer has done with this Crimson Tide team, showing an explosive offense early in the season.

The game against Georgia was DeBoer’s first SEC game as the head coach at Alabama. So, while it’s early in the season, he already has a marquee win.

Now, Kalen DeBoer will look to keep his Alabama team focused as they hit the road to take on Vanderbilt.

Paul Finebaum ranks Saturday night Alabama-Georgia game in context of SEC history

The game between Alabama and Georgia was an instant classic and, for Paul Finebaum, the best SEC game he’s seen.

“I’ve covered the SEC for more than 40 years. You can see that on my face right here, but I believe that is the best college football game in the SEC I have seen during all those years. I know we often get hung up on being prisoners of the moment but that is an exaggeration to say that we are in this case,” Finebaum said.

“You saw the lead. You saw the comeback. You saw the ending. It had everything you could have, including the fact that we have this rivalry in the SEC, two of the best teams in the entire country who may or may not play again. It had absolutely everything. What Kirby Smart said is correct, that is true of both schools, nobody left anything on the field. They put it all out there and if you ask who’s the better team, the better team won, but next time it could be different.”
