Recap: SMU crushes Florida State, 42-16, wins first ever ACC contest

The SMU Mustangs rolled past Florida State Saturday night, 42-16, winning the first ever ACC contest for the program. Here’s the play-by-play recap of how Rhett Lashlee’s team grabbed the win.

SMU takes 5:16 off the clock on their opening drive, which is capped off by a 13-yard touchdown run by Brashard Smith. SMU opens the scoring and leads 7-0 with 9:44 left in the 1st quarter.

The Florida State offense answers back with a touchdown of their own to tie the game. 7-7 with 6:38 to go in the 1st quarter.

The Mustangs’ second drive is killed after Jennings takes back-to-back sacks with 3:30 left in 1st.

After Florida State created some self-inflicted problems on offense, SMU gets the ball at midfield. The game is still tied, 7-7, with less than a minute to go in the 1st quarter.

Jonathan McGill makes an outstanding play to intercept DJ Uiagalelei! SMU ball at their 32-yard line with 11:55 to go in the 2nd quarter.

FLEA FLICKER ALERT! Kevin Jennings finds Jordan Hudson WIDE OPEN for a 42-yard touchdown as the Mustangs reclaim the lead. 14-7 SMU with 10:20 to go in the 2nd quarter.

SMU can’t capitalize on a long drive as Colin Rogers sees his field goal attempt blocked. The score remains 14-7 with 4:57 to go in the 1st half.

The SMU defense comes up with a huge stop on 4th down and goal from the 2-yard line to keep the score at 14-7.

Another mishap on special teams for the Mustangs. The snap on a punt goes right over the punter’s head and through the end zone for a safety. SMU’s lead is now 14-9 with 0:22 left in the 2nd quarter.

HALFTIME: SMU leads Florida State 14-9. The Seminoles will get the ball to start the 2nd half.

SMU starts the second half with some fireworks (and champagne)! Ahmad Walker picks off DJ Uiagalelei and the Mustangs are in business to start the 3rd quarter.

The SMU offense capitalizes on the Florida State turnover. Jennings lobs one up to RJ Maryland, who comes down with the 11-yard touchdown catch to extend SMU’s lead. Mustangs now lead 21-9 with 13:00 to go in the 3rd quarter.

RJ MARYLAND IS A GROWN MAN! SMU continues their success on third down as Jennings connects with Maryland for his second receiving touchdown of the night. SMU leads 28-9 with 7:42 to go in the 3rd quarter.

Florida State puts a nice drive together and gets back into the end zone to cut into the Mustang lead. The score is now 28-16 with 4:45 to go in the 3rd quarter.

SMU is knocking on the door to end the 3rd quarter. The Mustangs lead 28-16 and will have the ball at the FSU 2-yard line to start the 4th quarter.

SMU begins the 4th quarter with a Roderick Daniels Jr. touchdown! The Mustangs are back up by 19 points as they lead 35-16. 14:23 to go in the 4th quarter.

Kobe Wilson, are you kidding me?! The senior linebacker with one of the more unbelievable pick-6s of the season. SMU now has their largest lead of the night, 42-16, with 12:55 to go in the game.

From there, the program took care of business, shutting out FSU’s backup quarterback, Brock Glenn.
