San Antonio Independent School District could derail Missions ball park project
Although City Council voted 9-2 this month to move forward on a tentative plan to build a $160 million minor league baseball stadium – a plan that would also displace some of the city’s most vulnerable residents – one entity could still derail the entire project: San Antonio Independent School District. Indeed, the 4,500-seat stadium is set to be built on Fox Tech High’s old baseball field, now being used as a school parking lot. However, real estate development firm Weston Urban – who also owns a large stake in the minor league San Antonio Missions baseball team – has yet to acquire the 2.3-acre plot of land from the district needed to build the stadium. The MLB has given San Antonio Missions ownership until Oct. 15 to purchase the land and present a plan for a new stadium.
