FOX rejects Netflix’s request for Tom Brady to call Christmas Day game

FOX rejects Netflix’s request for Tom Brady to call Christmas Day game

Netflix hosted a highly lucrative roast of Tom Brady in the spring, but the streaming giant won’t be able to secure Brady’s services on the call of one of its Christmas Day game offerings.

According to a report from the New York Post, FOX Sports has nixed a request from Netflix to have the top broadcasting crew of Tom Brady and Kevin Burkhardt call a game on Christmas Day.

Netflix made its foray into live sports recently with the acquisition of two Christmas Day games — Kansas City Chiefs vs. Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens vs. Houston Texans — for a reported price tag of about $150 million. The goal is for the streaming giant to start inching its way into the ever-competitive market of live sports.

Of course, how well the initial foray goes will likely determine how the organization pivots in the future.

Getting the right broadcasting crew is a big part of that, as it can greatly enhance the viewer experience. To that end, the New York Post reports that Ian Eagle, Noah Eagle, Greg Olsen and Nate Burleson are among the next targets now that Brady and Burkhardt have been taken off the target list.

Netflix joins streaming giants Prime, Peacock in NFL coverage

As Netflix seeks to shore up its standing atop the streaming world, live sports has become a coveted target.

“Last year, we decided to take a big bet on live — tapping into massive fandoms across comedy, reality TV, sports, and more,” Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said in a news release this spring. “There are no live annual events, sports or otherwise, that compare with the audiences NFL football attracts. We’re so excited that the NFL’s Christmas Day games will be only on Netflix.”

Added Hans Schroeder, NFL Executive Vice President of Media Distribution:

“We couldn’t be more excited to be the first professional sports league to partner with Netflix to bring live games to fans around the world. The NFL on Christmas has become a tradition and to partner with Netflix, a service whose biggest day of the year is typically this holiday, is the perfect combination to grow this event globally for NFL fans.”

Netflix had a major win this spring with the live-streamed roast of Tom Brady. The three-hour-long program became the streamer’s sixth-most streamed show of the week, despite only being on the platform for half a day at the time of the rankings release.
