Troy Fautanu injury: Steelers sign veteran OL Calvin Anderson to replace injured rookie

Troy Fautanu injury: Steelers sign veteran OL Calvin Anderson to replace injured rookie

The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing veteran offensive lineman Calvin Anderson, according to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network. This comes after Steelers rookie offensive lineman Troy Fautanu was placed on injured reserve.

Anderson was previously with the New England Patriots, signing a two-year contract with the team in March 2023. He was placed on injured reserve in November of that year after suffering a heart contusion in practice. In August of this year, the Patriots placed Anderson on IR again before releasing him a few days later.

In 2019, Anderson signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent after playing college football with the Texas Longhorns in 2018. The 28-year-old was waived from the team in May of that year before the New York Jets claimed him. Anderson was on the Jets’ practice squad for the first four weeks of the season before the Denver Broncos signed him to their practice squad.

In 2020, Anderson played in all 16 games for Denver and would remain on the team for another two seasons. In his three years with the Broncos, Anderson played in 41 games with 12 starts.

Earlier this year, Anderson spoke to the Boston Globe about making a huge comeback. “If I were to win Comeback Player of the Year, it would come with a lot of good play . . . which is why I’m in the gym getting crazy-big right now,” he said in May, per Pro Football Talk. “Don’t let that get lost, either. But if I were to win Comeback Player of the Year, it wouldn’t be about me, but about how God brought me back from this.’’

Anderson will add depth and experience to an offensive line that suffered a big blow with the loss of Troy Fautanu. The Steelers’ No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft suffered a knee injury during the preseason opener, missing the rest of the preseason. The Washington alum started last week against the Denver Broncos but landed back on the injury report this past weekend.
