Kirk Herbstreit reacts to Josh Heupel’s emotional locker room speech following OU win

Kirk Herbstreit reacts to Josh Heupel’s emotional locker room speech following OU win

Josh Heupel is one of the all-time greats in Oklahoma football history. A reminder of that is his image on the stadium in Norman. He was the Heisman Trophy runner-up during his playing days in Norman, where he helped guide Oklahoma to a 2000 BCS National Championship. Heupel was also the co-offensive coordinator for the Sooners from 2011 to 2014.

So of course, with the TennesseeOklahoma game being at Oklahoma, it meant a little something extra for the Sooners’ great. He let his team know that in his emotional postgame locker room speech. The fans in Norman were gracious to one of their all-time greats. Before the game on Saturday, Oklahoma fans gave him a standing ovation and a loud cheer.

Following the 25-15 win for Tennessee, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit commented on the video via his Twitter page.

“Some good things brewin’ in Knoxville. Cool to see Coach getting vulnerable with his guys. Special,” Herbstreit commented on the postgame locker room speech.

It’s a really nice speech from Heupel. But the results on the field are truly showing that Tennessee can be special this season. In their first four games, the Volunteer defense hasn’t allowed more than 15 points. They whipped Chattanooga 69-3, dominated NC State 51-10, and shutout Kent State 71-0.

Josh Heupel has to be pleased with his team early

While the offense has been the main attraction under Heupel for most of his coaching career, it looks like he’s got a very impressive defensive unit this year in Knoxville. They’ll face off against Arkansas and Florida in their next two games, before a potential showdown with the Alabama Crimson Tide on Oct. 19th. The Volunteers are looking like a legitimate College Football Playoff contender.

They currently rank second in the country in scoring (54 points per game), right behind Ole Miss. The Volunteers’ rushing attack currently ranks sixth in the nation (290 yards per game). Running back Dylan Sampson has been dominant, rushing for 449 yards and 10 touchdowns so far.

And their defensive unit currently ranks fifth in the nation in points allowed per game (7.0).

Tennessee (4-0) will look to keep things rolling against Arkansas (3-1) in their next game. The Volunteers will get a week of rest, before strapping on the pads again on Saturday, October 5th. Game time has not yet been announced.
