It’s not a classic Big Ten rivalry by any means, but Illinois and Penn State has become a must-see game within the conference over the last couple of seasons, and 2025 may represent their most important showdown yet.
While Penn State historically has an impressive record against Illinois, having 21 wins to Illinois’ six over the Nittany Lions, they’ve had trouble with the Fighting Illini recently. The game many will remember is the 20-18 never-ending shootout in Happy Valley in 2021, where Illinois pulled off a massive upset over Penn State.
Heading into Week 5, FanDuel believes Penn State should be feeling themselves next weekend, as they’re currently favored by 17.5 points ahead of their matchup. As of right now, the over/under is set at 48.5
While both teams are off to awesome starts in 2024, Penn State was expected to be a College Football Playoff contender this season. The Nittany Lions got started with a bang, defeating West Virginia on the road, but then they faltered a bit in their home-opener against Bowling Green, skating by with a win. After a bye week in Week 3, they returned to action in Week 4, where they beat Kent State 56-0.

Meanwhile, Illinois is proving they’re a team to be reckoned with in the Big Ten. They’re not just willing to play spoiler, they want to be considered among the best, and if they keep winning, they’ll get their respect. A massive win over Nebraska on the road in Week 4 has them rolling with a ton of momentum entering Happy Valley, but who knows if it’ll be enough to get them another dub.
