But after the Sooners struggled for a half with Jackson Arnold under center before showing life under true freshman Michael Hawkins, color commentator Kirk Herbstreit felt like he knew which quarterback was the right pick. And it was the quarterback that managed to lead touchdown drives on Saturday.

“This kid’s your quarterback,” Herbstreit said of Hawkins in the dying moments of the game. “This is the quarterback right here, No. 9, moving on into next week. He’s done enough in these handful of series in the second half.

“This is what it’s all about right here. This kid is fighting for every inch.”
