Mississippi State quarterback Blake Shapen suffers season-ending shoulder injury

Mississippi State quarterback Blake Shapen suffers season-ending shoulder injury

Mississippi suffered more than just a 45-28 loss to Florida in Saturday’s SEC opener at Davis Wade Stadium. To add insult to injury, head coach Jeff Lebby announced that starting quarterback Blake Shapen suffered a shoulder injury that will force Shapen to miss the rest of the season.

Shapen, a former Baylor transfer, suffered the shoulder injury in the fourth quarter against Florida. Against the Gators, Shapen was 13 of 20 passing for 140 yards with one touchdown and he also had a rushing touchdown.

“We’re all hurting for Blake after this unfortunate news,” Lebby said in a school release. “Blake is the ultimate competitor and teammate and an unquestioned leader in our program. I know he will work incredibly hard to come back stronger than ever, and he will continue to serve as a team leader from the sidelines. We will support Blake every step of the way during his recovery process and explore all options to help him seek a medical hardship waiver to regain his lost year of eligibility.”

For the season and in his four starts. Shapen has completed 74 of 108 passes for 974 yards with eight touchdowns and one interception. Shapen has also rushes for 36 yards and two more scores. Shaoen is eligible to request a medical redshirt for the 2024 season, which would allow him to return next season for his final year of eligibility.

The Bulldogs have opened the season 1-3 after Saturday’s setback against Florida and travel to No. 1 Texas next Saturday.
