• 1Q, 6:37 — Michigan goes three and out and decides to punt on 4th and 2. Tommy Doman’s punt landed in the end zone for a USC touchback. The Trojans will start at their own 20-yard line.

• 1Q, 8:31 — Michigan takes over at its own 42-yard line, after forcing a three-and-out and USC punt out of its own end zone. A 15-yard penalty on the punt return was assessed (Michigan safety Brandyn Hillman).

• 1Q, 10:18 — Michigan picked up a fourth and inches from its own 34-yard line to keep the first drive of the game going, but it failed to get across the 50-yard line, ending at its own 44-yard line. Alex Orji appeared to draw a defensive lineman offsides on third down, but Michigan didn’t get the call. Orji scrambled on a pass play but didn’t reach the first-down marker. The Wolverines’ punt was downed at the USC 6-yard line.

Eight of the previous 10 matchups came in the Rose Bowl with the Trojans holding a 6-2 edge. Michigan won both previous regular-season games in 1957 and ’58. USC won the last meeting between the schools, 32-18, in the 2007 Rose Bowl. The 1958 game at The Big House was a 20-19 Michigan victory.
