Russell Wilson injury update: Pittsburgh Steelers release Friday injury report

Russell Wilson injury update: Pittsburgh Steelers release Friday injury report

On Friday, the Pittsburgh Steelers released their final injury report ahead of their matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. It will be the Steelers’ first home game of the season.

The Steelers can expect Acrisure Stadium to be packed for the Week 3 showdown. Pittsburgh is 2-0 this season, boasting wins over the Atlanta Falcons and the Denver Broncos. Justin Fields has started at quarterback for the Steelers in their first two games.

It’s unclear whether Wilson will start for the Steelers if he’s healthy on Sunday. The 35-year-old QB has only been a limited participant at practice this week and may not be prepared for full-speed reps in a regular season game.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin may be particularly hesitant to play Wilson due to Fields’ early success this season. Through two games, Fields has completed 30-of-his-43 (69.8%) pass attempts for 271 yards and a touchdown, without throwing an interception.

Rex Ryan weighs in on the Pittsburgh Steelers QB dilemma

Despite Wilson’s illustrious résumé, several NFL analysts believe the Steelers should stick with Fields at QB until he gives them a reason not to.

“Look, nothing against Russell Wilson, because he’s not healthy right now. So, the decision is simple,” Rex Ryan said regarding the situation, believing Fields should start moving forward. “I’ve always called this guy the future because I love the ability of this guy right here. But the future is a whole string of nows, and right now, he gets to play again, he gets to play again, and I thought, in the offseason, it’s the best trade, by far, during the season, for nothing. A sixth-round pick, which was absolutely crazy.

“Look, I get it, initially, when he came into the league, he’s a better athlete than he is a quarterback, so what? So was Steve Young, you know what I mean? So was Randall Cunningham. Guess what? They can get better. Those guys have a tendency to get better. If all of a sudden, this guy hits, you’re looking at a superstar.”

The Steelers and Chargers will square off at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday. The game will air live on CBS.
