Bryce Young on being benched by Panthers: ‘I didn’t do enough with it’

Bryce Young on being benched by Panthers: ‘I didn’t do enough with it’

The Carolina Panthers made the surprising decision to bench Bryce Young earlier this week following an 0-2 start to the season.

Young threw for zero touchdowns and three interceptions in blowout losses to the Saints and Chargers in Week 1 and Week 2, prior to being benched.

The former Alabama star shared his reaction to getting benched on Thursday when speaking with the media. Young took the blame for not playing better when asked by Nick Carboni if he felt like he was given enough time as the starting quarterback.

“Um, you know, I don’t think that’s up for me to decide,” Bryce Young said. “Again, there’s a lot of plays that for last year and these first two games, for the most part every snap hit my hands. And I didn’t do enough with it, at the end of the day. I take accountability for that.”

The Panthers have been the worst team in the NFL over the past two seasons, going 2-17 since the start of the 2023 season.

Young’s supporting cast has been bashed for not playing better around him, but he said he deserves plenty of blame for the play of the Panthers’ offense, too.

“There’s plays, there’s stuff, there’s a long list of things that, you know, I wish I was better at and I’m going to continue to work to grow and improve on and be better at,” Bryce Young said. “So I’m always going to look in the mirror. Circumstances are what they are for not just me but for everyone. Everyone’s dealing with something. Everyone has circumstances.”

The Panthers are expected to start Andy Dalton at quarterback on Sunday in place of Young. The veteran will try to lead Carolina to a win against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The 36-year-old Dalton is a former second-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals out of TCU. He has made the Pro Bowl three times during the course of his career.

While Dalton is the starter for now, Bryce Young isn’t giving up on eventually being a starting quarterback in the NFL, perhaps even with the Carolina Panthers.

“You know, if I went out there and played better and we won games, at the end of the day that falls on me that that didn’t happen, and we wouldn’t be having this conversation,” he said. “So right now I am where I am and all I can do is try to be better each and every day.”
