Quinn Ewers injury update: Steve Sarkisian shares where Texas QB stands after Arch Manning named starter

Quinn Ewers injury update: Steve Sarkisian shares where Texas QB stands after Arch Manning named starter

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers will miss Saturday’s game against Louisiana Monroe as head coach Steve Sarkisian announced Thursday that Arch Manning will get the start.

With that said, Ewers is in a good place mentally, according to Sarkisian.

“As the week has gone on, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, he’s in really good spirits,” Sarkisian said, per Inside Texas. “One thing I try to impress upon Quinn is all the goals he had and that we’ve had for him coming into this season are all still there for him.”

Earlier this week, Sarkisian labeled Quinn Ewers as “day-to-day” with an oblique strain.

“There was a non-contact deal, which we touched on,” Sarkisian said. “The oblique strain there. When you guys get your injury report next Wednesday when that officially begins, he would be listed as questionable. We’re going to monitor him day to day and see what this looks like. But he would be questionable for Saturday on the report for next week.”

The AP Poll’s No. 1 team beat UTSA 56-7 Saturday with Quinn Ewers going 14-of-16 passing for 185 yards, two touchdowns and one interception before he had to exit the game.

On the season, Ewers has 691 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions. He also boasts a 73.4% completion percentage, putting him in the Heisman conversation.

His Heisman hopes obviously take a hit with the injury, but it’s still possible that he could win the award, particularly if he can return from the injury soon.

Earlier this week, ESPN insider Pete Thamel had this to say about Quinn Ewers:

“Sources: Quinn Ewers ab injury isn’t as serious as initially feared,” Thamel wrote. “He’s likely to miss the Louisiana Monroe game this week, but is ‘week to week’ after leaving the UTSA game with what Steve Sarkisian termed an abdominal strain.”

That is obviously good news and could signal that he will be back on the field soon.

As for Arch Manning, he played very well in relief of Ewers. The former No. 1 overall recruit threw 223 yards and four touchdowns in limited playing time against UTSA. He also had a 67-yard touchdown run.

Manning was named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week and earned praise from Sarkisian for how he was able to step up in the win.

“You never know, as a backup, when you’re going to get put in the game. For [Manning] to come in on his first play to hit DeAndre Moore for the touchdown. On his third play — we’re in a little different style of offense when he’s in there — the little zone read, to pull it and the explosive play,” Sarkisian said.

“I love the post throw to Ryan Wingo for the for the long touchdown. The big corner route to Ryan. He threw a beautiful kind of slot fade to Johntay Cook for a touchdown. He did some nice things for us and extended some drives on third downs. So that was a great experience for him that he got.”

Manning will now have the opportunity to show what he can do from the start against ULM on Saturday.
