Joel Klatt calls Arch Manning, Quinn Ewers debate ‘an embarrassment of riches’

Joel Klatt calls Arch Manning, Quinn Ewers debate ‘an embarrassment of riches’

Having two top-rated quarterbacks on your team has always been a luxury for Texas. However, now that we saw it in play, Joel Klatt sees just how wealthy that position makes the Longhorns.

Klatt spoke about Arch Manning and Quinn Ewers after the latter stepped in for the former this weekend. While the talk around it has been a lot, it worked out in Texas’ favor as an option that they can rely on if needed.

“It’s almost like this is an embarrassment of riches,” said Klatt while on ‘The Herd’ on Wednesday. “Like, this is a great problem to have.”

Ewers left towards the start of the second quarter last weekend against UTSA with a strain of his oblique. He exited after starting 14-16 (87.5%) for 185 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

That led to Manning coming in and seeing his first real collegiate action. He went on to go 9-12 (75%) for 223 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed three times for 57 yards and a touchdown – although a sack negated some of the yardage from when he broke off a 67-yard scoring run. All that came in what was a 56-7 win for Texas over the Roadrunners on Saturday. It also earned him the honor as a Co-Freshman of the Week in the SEC.

Arch looks great,” said Klatt. “He does.”

Again, whether valid or invalid, so much of the discussion that has been had around them is about Manning eventually replacing Ewers on The 40 Acres. Still, after that outing, Klatt thinks it’s now more about what both of them being there allows the Longhorns to have.

“Arch gives Texas the opportunity to just be patient with Quinn Ewers,” Klatt said in regards to the injury. “You don’t have to rush him back.”

“It also allows you to be more aggressive when Ewers comes back. Ewers can play a little bit more free than if you have a situation where you don’t have a backup,” Klatt added. “You’re going to get the entirety of the offense in its fullest because they’ve got depth everywhere. They’ve got depth at wide receiver, they’ve got depth at offensive line. Now, obviously, they’ve proven out to have depth at quarterback.”

Manning is about as good of a backup and insurance policy as any quarterback room has in the country. That has Texas so well-off as they can continue to play Ewers while knowing what’s still to come, whether sooner or later, with Manning.
