Tennessee Football sticking with traditional road uniform at Oklahoma Saturday night

Tennessee Football sticking with traditional road uniform at Oklahoma Saturday night

Tennessee Football will be back in its traditional road uniform when the sixth-ranked Vols go to No. 15 Oklahoma on Saturday night. The Vols announced on social media on Thursday that they’ll be in white helmets, white jerseys and white pants.

It’s the same look Tennessee wore two weeks ago in the 51-10 win over North Carolina State in the Duke’s Mayo Classic at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

The Vols opened the season in their Smokey Grey alternate uniform in the 69-3 win over Chattanooga on August 31 and was in orange jerseys and orange pants on Saturday in the 71-0 win over Kent State at Neyland Stadium.

Oklahoma is home for a fourth straight game after beating Tulane 34-19 on Saturday, Houston 16-12 last week and Temple 51-3 on August 29.

The Sooners opened as a 5.5-point favorite over the Vols in early betting lines released during the offseason, but Tennessee flipped to a 2.5-point road favorite last week. The line had moved to Tennessee -7.5 by Sunday morning.

Tennessee Football’s uniforms this season

Tennessee was in its traditional road uniform against NC State last week, wearing white helmets, white jerseys and white pants in the neutral-site win over the Wolfpack. The Vols started the season in an alternate uniform, wearing their Smokey Grey set in the 69-3 win over Chattanooga.

The Smokey Grey alternate, part of the Smokey Grey Series, paid tribute to the Volunteer State, with the jersey featuring the Tri-Star logo on the sleeve, Tennessee across the chest and an an altered helmet stripe and pants stripe mimicked the state flag.

Alternate uniforms have been a constant during the Josh Heupel era. The Vols introduced their Dark Mode alternate uniform in 2021, with black pants and black jerseys, with orange numbers and orange pants stripes. An all-black helmet, with an orange Power T and orange helmet stripe, was added in 2022.

Tennessee also debuted an alternate orange helmet for the first time in program history at South Carolina in 2022. The Smokey Grey alternate returned in 2022.

The Tennessee-Oklahoma Series

Tennessee and Oklahoma have played just four times dating back to 1939, but played twice in the last 11 years.

The Sooners rallied from down 17-0 at Neyland Stadium in September 2015 to win 31-24 in overtime with quarterback Baker Mayfield leading the comeback.

Tennessee had gone to Oklahoma the season before, losing 34-10 in Norman in the second year under former head coach Butch Jones.

The first two meetings were in the Orange Bowl. Oklahoma won 26-24 on New Year’s Day in 1968 in Miami and Tennessee won 17-0 on January 2, 1939.
