Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing complex investigated by FBI

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing complex investigated by FBI

The Indiana headquarters of an Indy Car racing team co-owned by David Letterman was the site of FBI activity on Wednesday, according to multiple reports. FBI personnel was on scene investigating, according to CBS4Indy.

The race team in question, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, is headquartered in Zionsville, Indiana, and upper northwest suburb of Indianapolis. Further reports added that local police were requested to assist, and so far the FBI has declined further comment.

It’s unclear if the investigative actions taken by the FBI are looking into something wholly involving the racing team and/or it’s headquarters, or if the Rahal Letterman Lanigan team is just a piece of a bigger puzzle of a larger investigation.

It’s also unclear in what capacity the FBI and local authorities were present on Wednesday. Reports indicate they arrived at the facility around 8:30 a.m. local time, but it’s not clear if a search warrant was executed or if any materials were seized.

So far, the team has also decline or not responded to various requests from media, per reports.

Rahal Lettreman Lanigan is owned by — along with Letterman, an Indiana native — former Indiana 500 winner Bobby Rahal and Mike Lanigan, an entrepreneur. The team facility in Zionsville, covering 100,000 square feet, opened a few years ago.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing currently fields a trio of drivers in the Indy Car racing series, among other levels of racing. The Indy Car drivers are Rahal’s son Graham Rahal, Pietro Fittipaldi and Christian Lundgaard.

Racing teams running afoul of the law is not an unheard of phenomenon. In 2007, the Ferrari Formula 1 team alleged that a former employee, along with a McLaren Formula 1 team engineer and his wife, were involved in the theft of technical information. That case led to a legal action in Italy and one in England, the latter of which was dropped after an agreement was reached between the parties.

This story is developing.
