Utah quarterback Cam Rising missed the entire 2023 season following a major knee injury that required surgery. Returning back to the field this season in the Utes’ season opener before unfortunately suffering another injury. Hurting his hand in Week 2 against Baylor after getting hit into a water cooler on his way out of bounds on a play.

Rising missed Utah’s Week 3 matchup against Utah State last weekend as a result of the injury. But on Wednesday college football insider Pete Thamel gave a positive update on Utah’s veteran quarterback ahead of a high-stakes matchup versus Oklahoma State this weekend.

“Well we did see him in practice yesterday, Victoria, and he is cleared and expected to play,” Thamel said to Victoria Arlen on ESPN’s CollegeFootball Live. “I think it’s notable, he was not cleared to play in Saturday’s game and did not practice last week. So everything is pushing towards Cam Rising playing in Stillwater on Saturday.”

Rising suiting up this weekend is outstanding news for the Utes after helping lead the team to back-to-back Pac-12 Championship wins and Rose Bowl appearances when he was fully healthy in 2021 and 2022. As Thamel shared more details regarding his injury and how he plans on protecting himself this Saturday in Boone Pickens Stadium.

“Here’s where the drama lies, he had a glove on his hand in warm ups at Utah State and he wore one in practice so far this week. He had a dislocated finger on his throwing hand, and my understanding, there were some stitches near that finger,” Thamel explained. “Those injuries are obviously healing, so will he or won’t he have a glove on his throwing hand in Stillwater is one of the big questions we’ll be watching in pregame warmups.”

Rising enters the marquee matchup with 5,918 yards and 53 touchdown passes under his belt. As he’ll look to lead Utah to a signature win in their first year in a new conference against another ranked opponent who made it to the Big 12 Championship game last season.

He threw for 254 yards and five touchdowns in Utah’s season opener, followed by 92 yards and two touchdown passes versus Baylor before exiting the game in the second quarter. A standard he can hopefully maintain against Oklahoma State this weekend fresh off of an injury.
