Tua Tagovailoa injury update: Miami Dolphins place QB on injured reserve

Tua Tagovailoa injury update: Miami Dolphins place QB on injured reserve

Miami Dolphins starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is being placed on injured reserve according to multiple reports, including one from NFL insider Mike Garafolo.

Garafolo reported the news Tuesday afternoon on Twitter.

Tua Tagovailoa must now miss four games, meaning that he will not be back until Week 8 at the earliest. Over the next five weeks the Dolphins face the Seahawks, Titans, Patriots and Colts. They also have a bye in Week 6.

“Sources to me and @RapSheet: The #Dolphins are placing QB Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve in order to give him ample time to progress through the stages of concussion protocol and meet with outside neurologists,” Mike Garafolo posted on Twitter. “The earliest Tagovailoa could return is Week 8 against the #AZCardinals, but the Dolphins are committed to placing no timeline on him as he works through a deliberate process and eventual return to play.”

Tua Tagovailoa suffered his third and most recent concussion in the NFL last Thursday against the Buffalo Bills. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was asked earlier this week about the possibility of Tagovailoa ending up on injured reserve.

He said at the time that there wasn’t enough information yet to make a decision on the potential move. Apparently that has now changed.

When Tagovailoa went down on Thursday evening, his right hand curled into a fist and extended into the air. Although it was not as severe, the involuntary action was eerily familiar to Tagovailoa’s reaction when he suffered a concussion in September 2022.

The concussion was Tagovailoa’s first of two that season.

The former Alabama standout has now had three known concussions during his NFL career. It was a slow night for Tagovailoa before he suffered the injury. He finished the game with 145 passing yards and a touchdown while throwing three interceptions.

Numerous NFL veterans and media personalities have implored Tagovailoa to retire to preserve his health since the injury on Thursday, but there is no sign that he is ready to do that yet.

With Tagovailoa out, the Dolphins will start Skylar Thompson at quarterback.

In two games this season, Tagovailoa has 483 yards, two touchdowns, three interceptions and a 64.5% completion percentage. He had the best season of his career in 2023, throwing for 4,624 yards, 29 touchdowns, 14 interceptions and a 69.3% completion percentage.

Miami hits the road this coming Sunday and takes on the Seattle Seahawks at 4:05 p.m. ET.
