Curt Cignetti calls out ‘Mickey Mouse’ Big Ten officiating from UCLA game

Curt Cignetti calls out ‘Mickey Mouse’ Big Ten officiating from UCLA game

Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti wasn’t pleased with some of the called the officials made during the Hoosiers’ 41-13 win over UCLA during Week 3.

Overall, there were 21 penalties total against both teams over the weekend. 14 were on the Hoosiers and seven on the Bruins. Cignetti argued that there were a few penalties missed by the group of referees, and some calls he feels were unwaranted as well.

“I think there needs to be a balance there and some common sense and intent, also,” Cignetti said. “Probably the most hardest hits in the game was when Aiden Fisher intercepted the pass, you know, and got hit in the head. And there was, there’s no call for that one.

“And the other ones were kind of Mickey Mouse, but that’s the way it went down Saturday, and we’re not going to change the way we play. And, you know, I don’t think there was anything dirty out there, that’s for sure.”

Those 14 penalties cost Indiana 127 total yards compared to the 74 for UCLA. Still, they managed to compiled 420 total offensive yards despite their setbacks.

Twice Indiana was penalized for targeting calls, which ejected both defensive lineman CJ West and cornerback D’Angelo Ponds. The UCLA defender who hit Aiden Fisher after his interception did not get ejected for the same penalty after review and the pick was called back due to pass interference. It appears as though Cignetti wants those calls to be even across the board.

Regardless, the Hoosiers left LA with a massive victory over the Bruins to spoil their Big Ten debut.

The win improves Indiana to 3-0 on the season — all multi-score victories over FIU, Western Illinois and UCLA during the first three weeks of the season. They took down WIU 77-3 in Week 2 before embarassing the Bruins at home, and it appears they’re firing on all cylinders heading into Week 4 against Charlotte.

Indiana is a four-touchdown favorite against the 49ers at home, and will be the final tune-up game before exclusively playing Big Ten opponents for the rest of the year. That includes a home game against a hot Nebraska squad, and back-to-back weeks in Novemeber against Michigan and Ohio State.

Looking to clean up the penalties on Saturday, kickoff between Indiana and Charlotte is set for Noon ET and will air live from Bloomington on the Big Ten Network.
