Micah Parsons contradicts Mike Zimmer, Mike McCarthy in reaction to Cowboys’ blowout loss

Micah Parsons contradicts Mike Zimmer, Mike McCarthy in reaction to Cowboys’ blowout loss

Just over 24 hours removed from Sunday’s blowout loss to the New Orleans Saints, Micah Parsons has spoken on the performance. The Dallas Cowboys star edge rusher called out the defensive unit’s effort throughout the game. New Orleans scored at will for nearly all four quarters, quite the opposite of what Dallas produced a week ago in Cleveland.

“The effort was not there, by all 11,” Parsons said. “No matter who played well, who didn’t play well. The effort by all 11 was not there… At the end of the day, you have a standard of who you are in training camp and throughout this process to get you ready for this season. We didn’t uphold that standard. That wasn’t the Dallas Cowboys that I saw or I knew that showed up last week.”

Usually, nothing wrong with calling out effort following an embarrassing loss. Hearing about a lack of effort can be disheartening for Cowboys fans after just two weeks of the regular season. But Parsons’ comments contradict what head coach Mike McCarthy said during his Monday press conference.

“I wouldn’t say it’s an effort issue,” McCarthy said via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “I think it really was they were quicker to the first punch than we were. They finished better than we did.”

New defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer was in the same boat as McCarthy, not believing effort was an issue. Zimmer did take responsibility for the performance while acknowledging the Saints were just quicker than the Cowboys at times.

“I don’t really think it was an effort issue,” Zimmer said via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “That team beat us off the snap quite a few times. … We didn’t get moving quick enough. … I just got to do a better job.”

So either the two coaches are not being honest in their evaluation or there is a disagreement with their best defensive player. Parsons is a player widely known for his high motor too, continually striving to be one of the best players in the NFL and attempting to win at any cost.

No matter how McCarthy, Parsons, and Zimmer view the defensive effort, everybody will need to have things fixed quite quickly. Baltimore heads to Dallas on Sunday and despite being 0-2, an elite ground game is coming to town. Both the effort and coaching will have to be better in order to take down the Ravens.
