Through their first three games, LSU has split their two close contests. However, even after this weekend’s comeback win, Brian Kelly knows that this can’t be who his team is if they want to be successful.

Kelly spoke about his team’s encounters so far during an appearance on ‘The Paul Finebaum Show’ on Monday. Simply put, he realizes the Tigers have to be better to not be in the situations that they’ve already found themselves in this season.

“Well, you can’t live like this,” said Kelly. “I mean, you don’t get many chances to come back from a 17-nothing deficit on the road against a really good football team.”

“You can’t live like this,” Kelly stated.

LSU went 1-1 overall in their big games with a seven-point loss to USC and three-point win at South Carolina. Against the Trojans in Las Vegas, the Tigers gave up their fourth-quarter lead in the final six minutes. As for versus the Gamecocks in Columbia, they spotted their opponent a 17-0 lead that they had to overcome during the second quarter and into the fourth quarter before eventually winning in the final minutes.

Through the first quarter of their year, LSU does sit at 2-1. Still, if they want to achieve anything this fall, Kelly says straightening it out and executing better in all phases are going to be vital.

“Number one, we’ve got to make sure that we’ve got the right personnel on the field. Number two, we’ve got to make sure that we’ve got the right schemes in place. Number three, we’ve got to continue to prepare so we can eliminate the mistakes that have cost us, you know, and obviously put us in these kinds of positions,” said Kelly. “We had a chance to win the USC game with, you know, eight minutes to go in the game. We weren’t able to close out because of mistakes. In this one, we started poorly.”

“It’s great to have resilience, it’s great to have a team that you know is going to fight. But that can’t be the way that this football team continues to build its identity,” Kelly continued. “That would be one piece that you would love to have but it’s got to be a higher level of execution. We can’t give up the big plays on defense. We know we’re starting to see more turnovers and we’re getting after the quarterback. We can’t continue to stall inside the 10-yard line. We had two opportunities where we came up with no points inside the 15-yard line. That can’t continue to happen. That has happened three times this year – leaving way too many points on the field. Taking care of the football and Garrett understands that. Those things have to be better and that’s about us more so than it is the opponent.”

LSU has already lived and died by some of these issues this season. Now, knowing how unsustainable it is, Kelly is looking for them to get corrected starting this weekend versus the Bruins in Baton Rouge.

“We can’t live like this,” said Kelly. “We’ve got to clean these things up moving forward against UCLA.”
