Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase is likely to be fined for his incident on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, according to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. Chase verbally attacked the referee for a possible missed penalty on quarterback Joe Burrow. The incident led to an unpsortsmanlikely penalty and teammates holding Chase back. The game ended with the Chiefs defeating the Bengals 26-25.

After the game, the referee, Alex Kemp, explained why he called he penalty on Chase. It’s pretty clear cut. “It’s just simply abusive language toward a game official. That’s all it was,” he said. “And there was really no interpretation. I’m not going to repeat to you what he said, but there was no interpretation with the language that he used–just abusive language.”

Kemp was then asked if he was able to say what Chase was upset about. “He was questioning the tackle. He thought he was hip-drop tackled on the previous play,” he explained. “And so, he came to me wondering about a hip-drop tackle. That was the beginning line of questioning.”

This comes as Chase ended his hold-in with Cincinnati after seeking a contract extension. In his first two games of the 2024 season, the former LSU star has caught 10 passes for 97 yards and zero touchdowns.

Before the season began, Burrow expressed his confidence in Chase. “He’s ready to go. . . . I saw him out there today,” Burrow said, per Pro Football Talk. “He looks fast, strong, like he always does. I know he’s been doing what he needs to do to stay ready, if he needs to be ready. I’m confident that if he does go out there Sunday he’ll be the Ja’Marr we all know.”

Chase has put together a strong NFL career, after being drafted by the Bengals in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. The 24-year-old won Offensive Rookie of the Year for catching 81 passes for 1,455 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2021. He has caught at least 80 passes for 1,000-plus yards in his three full seasons in the league and has made the Pro Bowl each year.
