Greg McElroy: ‘It feels like it’s over’ for Billy Napier at Florida

Greg McElroy: ‘It feels like it’s over’ for Billy Napier at Florida

When Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier left the field on Saturday, he did so to a chorus of boos from the home fans. On the field, the Gators fell to 1-2 on the season after getting beaten soundly by Texas A&M.

With rumors about Napier’s future swirling, college football analyst Greg McElroy shared on Always College Football that he feels like it’s over for Napier at Florida.

“This was a dominant performance by Texas A&M in many ways,” McElroy said. “You can look at the score at the end and maybe it didn’t look quite as dominant but it never felt like Florida really had a chance. Did it? It never felt like Florida was gonna have enough to muster a comeback…At the end of the day, three picks is gonna be really, really tough to overcome and people are already writing that Billy Napier is done.”

The Aggies held a 20-0 lead going into halftime against the Gators. Even with a second half push, Texas A&M still was able to beat Florida by multiple scores. It was the second home loss this season by multiple scores and Florida’s win over an FCS opponent remains their only in 2024.

“There’s already reports out there that they have already raised the money necessary for the buyout. They have all these other things,” McElroy said. “Fine. If they let him go, we’ll do an emergency podcast at some point, but it feels like it’s over. Doesn’t it? I mean, it feels like it’s over barring something completely unforeseen.”

Now in his third season at Florida, Billy Napier has a record of 12-16. The Gators have now lost seven straight games against FBS opponents.

“I didn’t expect them to beat Miami. I thought they really needed this one. I thought they could get this one and to have a half-hearted performance and to have a performance that was mistake-filled, has to be incredibly frustrating. But, man, Florida, just a disappointing start to the season and it appears like Billy Napier this will be his final year. It’s just a matter of when will his final game be. At this point, it does feel like a foregone conclusion,” McElroy said.

“I hate that. I really do. Billy Napier will be well compensated. People always say, ‘Billy Napier, $26 million to just walk out the door and not work.’ Yeah, but there’s 100 other people, if you look at their staff…there’s 100 other people whose job security is impacted by Florida’s lack of success. So, it does make me sad to see this situation going down and it does make me disappointed to know things are not looking good there in Gainesville.”

For now, Billy Napier remains the Florida head coach as he prepares to lead the Gators into Starkville for another SEC game against Mississippi State.
