Baylor QB update: Dequan Finn ‘or’ Sawyer Robertson listed on depth chart vs. Colorado

As Baylor gets ready to take on Colorado this week, the Bears released a new depth chart – and it has an interesting wrinkle. They list Dequan Finn “or” Sawyer Robertson at QB.

Finn won the starting quarterback job ahead of the season after transferring from Toledo, and he threw for 307 yards and three touchdowns over two games. However, Robertson got the start last week against Air Force as Finn dealt with an injury and threw for 248 yards in the 31-3 victory.

Baylor coach Dave Aranda praised the way Robertson handled his first start, particularly pointing to his pocket presence. Now, it appears both quarterbacks are in play to start against Colorado on Saturday.

“Sawyer came in and performed really well,” Aranda said, via Sic’Em365’s Levi Caraway. “I thought he was poised. When the rush got in his face, he got the ball out. That calming presence in the pocket was good to see. He distributed the ball to guys who could do something with it.”

More on the battle between Sawyer Robertson, Dequan Finn

Finn arrived on campus this year as one of the most coveted quarterbacks in the transfer portal. He was a first team All-MAC selection in 2023 while helping lead Toledo to the conference championship. He led the league with 2,657 passing yards and 22 touchdowns while also doing work in the running game with 563 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.

Over the last three years, Finn threw for nearly 7,000 yards and 63 touchdowns. He then committed to Baylor as the No. 77 overall player and No. 14-ranked quarterback in the On3 Industry Transfer Rankings.

Robertson, meanwhile, started his college career at Mississippi State before arriving in Waco last season. He threw for 864 yards and two touchdowns in six appearances while backing up Blake Shapen. After Shapen transferred to Mississippi State, Robertson battled Finn for the starting job and lost the competition during training camp.

As for how close the competition was, Aranda said it was a touch decision. Ultimately, the way Finn handled pressure with his mobility helped him earn the starting nod.

“It’s a close competition. Guys are battling,” Aranda said at the time. “The things that Sawyer did today were the leadership and the poise in the pocket. There are times when Sawyer’s back there and there’s a nervous energy about him.

“Today, he was really calm and poised and made some throws where he stepped into it. It was impressive. [Finn] was able to see edge pressure and get us out of it and get us into something else, and that was good to see him do that.”
